Volunteering in Singapore to Rescue Rare Wildlife Injured Physically and Mentally — A Review

#Gained confidence and overcame prejudice about my pronunciation #Learned to respect wildlife #Pride in having an experience not everyone can have

  •

I was moved by how many people genuinely strive to respect wild animals as they are and to return them to nature.

I was able to learn a lot from those attitudes and ways of thinking,

I''m proud and delighted to have had an experience that not just anyone can easily have!!

    # Hello. I''m a 22-year-old college student who went to Singapore after taking a leave of absence.

Hello, I''m 22-year-old college student Kim Yeseul. I finished my second year of university and took a leave of absence.

While leading an ordinary college life, I wanted to have a special experience at least once.At the time I was applying, I wanted to travel abroad but had no real excuse and lacked the courage to go alone, so I was very conflicted. Then I happened to hear about gap year programs, and being impulsive, I was captivated by the reviews and applied right away.Since I have always been interested in animals, volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary caught my eye, and I thought it would be one of the most meaningful experiences of my life!

    # I chose the volunteer project because I wanted rest and healing!

I had a vague desire to go anywhere since I had no previous overseas experience, and I thought it was an opportunity that might never come again. That being said,I felt it would be reckless to travel aimlessly, so I thought it would be better to choose a volunteer program run by an organization. As expected, the Korea Gap Year staff helped me before and after I left and checked in on me, and I am truly grateful!

I didn''t have any big goals when I went on the gap year; the purpose was rest and healing!Rather than seeking a great revelation there, I wanted to calm my mind, so I think I was able to enjoy the volunteer work itself. AndSingapore is a country where awareness of animal welfare is somewhat higher than in our countryso I wanted to see the systematic systems that protect wildlife.

    # I was impressed by the high level of awareness of animal welfare.

Above all, I was able to gain experiences not easily available, and I learned a lot from the attitudes and thoughts toward wild animals.Instead of domesticating wild animals for human convenience,I was moved by how people respect wild animals in their untamed state and sincerely care for them, working hard to return them to nature.

And it was surprising that exchanges with nearby schools were active, so kindergartens and schools also linked field trips with volunteer activities. When schools came for group visits, they provided souvenirs and lessons related to environmental protection. I don''t think any schools in our country go to animal shelters, this also made me feel that, socially, the level of awareness about animal welfare is high.

    # My confidence has increased and I''m proud of myself!

I was usually really insecure about my English pronunciation and hesitated to speak, but after realizing that people from different places have very different accents, I gained confidence in my own pronunciation. I also learned a friendly way of speaking to Singaporeans and even tried ordering food with my clumsy words, Not only in English but in daily life as well, I feel that my overall confidence has improved!

Also, I''m very proud that I had an experience not everyone can have, and I''m extremely proud of myself just for having come back safely.

    # A piece of advice for future gap year participants!

Once you go and throw yourself into it, you''ll find that what you worried about was nothing compared to your fears. That was actually the case for me too—I met great people and got along well. The thing I most want to say is don''t worry too much!

Don''t leave the fact that the Earth has multiple continents and hundreds of countries as mere knowledge— I hope this becomes an opportunity for you to experience them firsthand, confront them, and see a wider world.

    # My tips for preparing for volunteer work in Singapore!

    - Accommodation & Meals

: We stayed in accommodation provided by the organization. Meals were provided, and they suited my taste better than I expected, which was great.

    - What to bring

: The sun is strong so be sure to bring a hat and arm sleeves.
