Unbeatable value! Learn English safely in Malta in the Mediterranean! Kim SuyeonGap-yearer (Gapper)(24 / university student) / Short-term language program in Malta — gap year review |
# Hello! I''m a university student who took a short-term language-study gap year in Malta before entering graduate school.

Hello.I am a 24-year-old university student who participated in the ''Short-term Language Study in Malta'' gap-year project.I majored in education at university, teach ethics as a part-time instructor at middle and high schools, and will soon enter graduate school to study philosophy.
After graduating from university and before going to graduate school, I wanted to spend my remaining time in a new way, so I joined the gap year!
*For Kim Suyeon, who wanted time to relax in daily life and to reflect on and grow toward her future self,She was given a customized one-on-one personal mission each day to enjoy leisurely experiences and to contemplate and set the direction of her future life, and a gap-year notebook was also provided so she could reflect on herself and make plans.
# I headed to Malta thanks to the excitement of my first trip to Europe and the hope of building English confidence!

As mentioned above, I ...After finishing my university studies and before going to graduate school, I needed an opportunity to grow on my own, and while planning to spend more than two months abroad, I learned about the gap-year project.
So even before applying I had been researching European countries near the Mediterranean,The two factors — excitement for my first European trip and the chance to build English confidence — aligned well, so I applied for the ''Short-term Language Study in Malta'' project.
# Through this short-term language study gap year in Malta, I wanted to recharge while improving my English skills!

I had goals for this short-term language study period in Malta.First, I wanted to build confidence in English, and I wanted to recharge by living with a daily routine completely different from Korea''s.
So rather than producing new tangible results during this Malta language-study gap year, I wanted to observe myself adapting to a new environment and become richer both inwardly and outwardly through seeing the lives of various people!
# What I liked most was spending time in Malta talking with people of various nationalities and exchanging cultures!

During the short-term language program in Malta that I joined, the best part was being able to talk with people from different nationalities, share food and culture, and spend time together!
I really liked the community where you receive help from those who are already there and give help to newcomers, sharing time and building trust. I was also impressed that, although talking in a foreign language with the international friends I met in Malta might seem to create distance, we actually became close quickly because we could be more honest and step outside our cultural backgrounds! :)
# What is a typical day like in the Malta short-term language program?

I usually left home around 8:30 a.m. and took the bus or ferry. I lived near the ferry terminal so I often used the ferry, but in winter the service was often suspended because of the weather.
For the 20-hours-per-week course, classes are held on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Each session is 90 minutes long; after one class there is a 30-minute break, then the second class takes place. During breaks we gathered in the lounge to meet other students or went to a nearby café to have coffee and pass the time! After leaving the school at 12:30, I would either buy lunch with friends or return home to eat.Sometimes we took walks nearby or went sightseeing. In the afternoons we did shopping or homework, and some students went to a nearby gym to exercise! :)
# I''m confident that my perspective on the world has broadened through my experiences in Malta!

Through this short-term language experience in Malta, I feel I gained a lot of confidence in being able to honestly show myself and communicate abroad. So I feel that as I take on new challenges and plan my life going forward, my range of choices has widened, and I definitely feel my outlook on the world has broadened!!
# To those considering a Malta short-term language gap-year project!

Don''t be afraid—try boldly, and sometimes during your gap year take time alone to recharge and give yourself the best possible time! :)
Also, there''s a regular coffee shop behind the local language school that serves as a meeting place for students. The cheap, delicious coffee and the owner’s knack for already knowing what I would order before I did made me go there every day for coffee. HahaIf you collect ten stamps on a coupon, one drink is free; their in-house bakery is delicious, and as it got colder they sold homemade soup which was also tasty. The shop''s name is ''Kir Royal''!!
# My tips for preparing for a short-term language program in Malta!

- Language
: At language schools in Malta, English proficiency varies widely! Many students start from the basics, so what''s most important is to try with confidence!
- Accommodation & Meals
: Kitchen facilities varied by accommodation. In my case I lived with a Japanese friend and the kitchen was well-equipped, so I was satisfied!
- What to bring
: I brought a pair of tweezers which I used conveniently. Also, since it’s a tourist area you can buy most daily necessities there, so you don''t need to worry!
