By participating in volunteer work in Singapore and seeing the injured animals firsthand, I felt remorse as a human being, and it became an opportunity to take an interest not only in animals but also in environmental protection!

# Hello. I am currently a university student majoring in sports medicine!

Hello! I''m Jeong Gyoseong, a university student majoring in sports medicine who dreams of becoming an expert in this field! haha
After being discharged from the military and not knowing how to spend the time before returning to school, I happened to find a site called ''Korea Gap Year'',Among the many gap year projects, I chose the Singapore overseas volunteer project because I thought it would give me time to think about my future plans and allow me to see and touch injured animals firsthand!
*For participants who wanted time to reflect on their future career and themselves and to grow, activities that offered special local experiences and daily customized 1:1 personal missions to help get to know oneself were provided, and a Gap Year Note for self-reflection and planning was also given.
# I was so excited because it was my first time going abroad!

This was my first time traveling abroad alone as a gap year overseas activity, so I had a strong desire to challenge myself and was excited to experience living in a different place!
I received a lot of help from Gap Year''s overseas volunteer orientation materials when preparing to depart for Singapore. I printed out the orientation materials and checked each prepared item one by one! I also prepared by collecting information about Singapore in advance through YouTube, internet searches, and books.
# About the volunteer work in Singapore!

First, the local coordinator decided whether you would do the wildlife rescue volunteer work indoors or outdoors, and then the daily routine began. Indoors, we cared for reptiles and turtles; outdoors, we took care of land tortoises.
Through this activity, by seeing and feeling the injured animals firsthand, I felt remorse as a human, and it became an opportunity to take an interest in not only animals but also environmental protection!
And the local volunteer organization staff took such good care of us that I was able to make my gap year period broader and more meaningful by visiting several places! :)Also, during the volunteer period, it''s a good idea to visit nearby Gardens by the Bay, Merlion Park, and Marina Bay together.
# Don''t hesitate — take on your own gap year!

To prospective gap year participants considering overseas activities: you don''t need to be afraid! I especially felt during this opportunity that even abroad, you can communicate well enough with gestures when language is a barrier.Don''t hesitate — go for it!
# My tips for preparing for a Singapore overseas volunteer & university student extracurricular activity!

- English
: I always carried a phone translator with me locally, and funny enough, my English actually improved because of it! Haha. I would immediately translate what I wanted to say and memorize it, then use it with the locals — this method was more effective than I expected. If you apply this method and practice a bit before departing for Singapore, I think it will help a lot!
- Accommodation & meals
: You''ll find yourself adapting quickly after about 2–3 days! Haha. Also, I recommend the food court near Choa Chu Kang MRT station! It''s cheap and tasty! Haha
- What to bring
: I brought fabric deodorizer and found it useful, and I regretted not bringing a handheld fan. However, if you prepare using the packing list the gap year coordinator handed out at orientation, you won''t have anything to worry about!!

My gap year overseas volunteering & extracurricular activities!
Experience ★★★★
: Through this gap year activity, I was able to have various experiences that I couldn''t have had in Korea!
Safety ★★★★★
: I felt that Singapore is always a safe city to visit at any time, day or night!
Leisure ★★★★★
: Just exploring on the weekends was enough of a rest! Haha
