I wanted to join a medical volunteer program in Cambodia to experience many things. During the four weeks I learned nursing duties at the hospital and was able to grow!
Anyone can do it! A gap year overseas medical volunteer program treating Cambodian children! University student gapper (21 years old / gap year) / 4-week gap year |
Before graduating college, I wanted to try overseas medical volunteer work at least once, so I went to Cambodia!

Hello. I am a nursing student who will be entering my second year.
I wanted to participate in overseas volunteer work at least once before graduating or starting a job, so I searched online for programs and discovered Korea Gap Year’s Cambodia project, then applied.
*For the college participant who wanted meaningful medical volunteer experience and new experiencesA daily tailored one-on-one personal mission was provided for times to try new experiences and to reflect on and set the direction of one’s future life, and a gap year notebook was also provided to help reflect and make plans.
I wanted to grow through this overseas volunteer experience!

I participated in this overseas medical volunteer activity to experience many things and hoped to grow from those experiences. I also joined with the goal of learning hospital duties that would help me later when I study! (haha)
Because I heard that communication at the local site would be in English, I steadily studied English from the end of the semester until departure to prepare for the trip.
I was able to learn and experience a lot about nurses'' duties at the local hospital!

Through this Cambodia medical volunteer project, I was able to learn about nurses'' duties in the hospital. I was going to be a second-year student and hadn’t learned much, but the local nurses and doctors didn’t scold me; they reassured me it was okay to make mistakes and encouraged me, which moved me throughout the volunteer period.
And In my country the nurse culture includes harsh hazing, but I don’t think I saw that in Cambodia.Rather, everyone seemed to be friendly with one another.I resolved that if I become a healthcare professional and can change hospital working environments in the future, I want to create a workplace where people treat each other warmly, like the atmosphere created by the Cambodian medical staff.
People I met during the Cambodia medical volunteer program!

The first person I met during my volunteer period in Cambodia was my roommate. He was German, and his friends were British and French. I heard they also came to Cambodia to volunteer medically; we ate together, went to the cinema at night, and went to the pool on weekends!
There was also a local trainee I met at the Cambodian hospital. At first I was cautious when I arrived, but the trainee smiled and said it was okay and we started talking, and later we messaged each other via Facebook Messenger. The trainee’s older brother worked as a nurse in the hospital’s intensive care unit; he was also friendly to me and explained in detail things I didn’t know. They even sent me the materials I needed so they''d help when I return to Korea to study, haha.
