Unbeatable value! Learn English safely in Malta in the Mediterranean, Europe!

#I learned how to love myself #A sense of ease from not comparing myself to others #I found myself in the slow flow of time

The time I spent in Malta after quitting my job taught me and made me realize many things.

Meeting new people and having new experiences taught me ways to love myself.

Also, while staying in Malta, time seemed to pass very slowly, so I was able to live more leisurely.

    # Hello! I am a participant in my 30s who quit my job and went on about a 3-month language study trip to Malta through a gap year program.

Hello! I''m 31-year-old Im Wonjae, who participated in a roughly 3-month Malta language study gap year project.

I had been only thinking about my dissatisfaction with the future, and in June I quit my job. That caused many psychological problems... So I first received one-on-one gap year counseling through an introduction from my sister, who had previously participated in a gap year project.

Then I felt that if I didn''t take the opportunity now, I wouldn''t be able to change and get to know myself, so I decided to join the gap year project!

*For Im Wonjae, who wanted time to relax in daily life and to think about and grow for his future,a customized 1:1 personal mission to enjoy leisurely experiences and to contemplate and set the direction of his future life was provided daily, and a gap year notebook was also provided to reflect on himself and make plans.

    # I wanted to have time alone and take on a challenge in Mediterranean Malta!

At first, I think I started the gap year to escape reality. So my initial goal was to go to Malta instead of Korea, meet various people, see how they get along with others and treat people, and learn how I could spend time alone.

Because I had thought that I couldn''t do anything on my own and had been pretending to be fine alone. I wanted to break that mold.

So I prepared for departure day while looking at the Malta language study project checklist provided by the gap year program!

    # Through this Malta language study trip, I realized many new things about myself!

What I liked during the Malta language study period was that, unlike in Korea, time strangely felt slower and I could meet good teachers and friends.

Another touching moment was when local Maltese friends gave me gifts—things I had always given but never received—telling me they would miss me and saying warm words. haha

What I learned was the locals'' relaxed attitude and their ability to smile in any situation! What I realized during my Malta language study was what I like, that I can say I''m happy, and that I am, to someone, a good person! :)

    # By meeting new people and having new experiences in Malta, I learned ways to love myself!

Before participating in this Malta language study gap year, I always compared myself to others and belittled myself. In my head I told myself not to, but I was always conscious of others and lacked confidence.

But after my time in Malta, I was able to know myself more clearly and learned how to love myself. And even if I experience the same pain or suffering again, I now have my own way to bounce back, so I can smile! haha

    # Here''s a day in the Malta language study project!

I had breakfast, took the bus at 8 a.m., got off near the school and tried to live like a local Maltese by drinking coffee. From 9 to 10:30 is the first period, then there''s a 30-minute break. At that time I talked with local friends and drank coffee, then the second period was from 11 to 12:30, and when there were afternoon classes they''d go until 2:30. I would walk around Valletta or sit on a bench watching the sea and blow away any thoughts or tiredness I felt that day, and in the evening I''d have a beer with local friends or my flatmate — that''s how I spent my day. haha

    # To those hesitating because of their age!

Among the people I met locally during my Malta stay was someone who had been a teacher in Korea and retired before coming. One thing they told me was, ''What does age matter? Just being out here locally like this is a challenge, and through many experiences you''ll be able to improve—don''t be afraid.''

You don''t have to be afraid because of your age! Worry about tomorrow tomorrow—it''s not too late!

    # My personal Malta travel recommendations!

Valletta, the capital of Malta, is beautiful both day and night. And if you like walking, you can walk almost anywhere!! For Gozo Island, the distances are too large to get around comfortably by bus, so if you don''t have an unlimited bus card it''s a good idea to book a tour.

Also, the local schools you attend for language study in Malta recommend many trips and offer discounts, so it''s good to take advantage of them. Personally, I like sunrises and sunsets, so I often went to the beach near Fort Tigné to look straight toward Valletta.

    # My gap year preparation tips!

    - Language
: Before going, I prepared by studying a book that lets you practice English conversation for different situations. However, I also signed up for additional afternoon classes at the local school. What I learned there helped a lot, so if you''re participating for less than three months, I think it''s a good idea to sign up for afternoon classes. (haha)

    - Accommodation & meals
: Since the accommodation is a shared space, it''s best to clean up after using common areas! (cleaning, washing dishes, etc.) For meals, I recommend buying ingredients at a large supermarket and cooking. Eating out usually costs around €15 on average, so it''s expensive. Also, while living in Malta you''ll develop a love for cooking and improve your skills, so if you serve Korean food to foreign friends it might help you become even closer.

    - What to bring
: My younger sibling packed stickers that symbolize Korea before I left. When I wrote letters to friends in Malta at the end and attached those stickers, they were so happy. Also, bring slippers, a few towels, and it''s a good idea to buy shampoo and conditioner in advance (they''re sold at supermarkets for about 1,000 won per bottle).

    My gap year!

    Experience ★★★★★
: During my language study in Malta, I tried many experiences I had previously avoided out of fear, and I gained a lot!

    Learning ★★★★
: The locals were really wonderful, and through their actions and language I was able to think, feel, and learn many new things.

    Environment ★★★★★
: I met many people who were tired of their jobs and came to find new ones through new experiences. Many were emotionally hurt and needed time to recuperate, and in Malta time seemed to pass very slowly. In Korea, the ''hurry hurry'' habit becomes ingrained, but here you can feel a slow life and reflect on yourself — I think it''s a great environment for that!

    Safety ★★★★★
: Malta was very safe! Once I dropped my credit card or walked around with my bag open, and locals who noticed told me.

    Leisure ★★★★★
: Malta offers many water-activity tours and programs to experience traditional foods. I don''t particularly like water activities, but I enjoy looking at the sea and watching sunrises and sunsets, and I had fun spending time visiting historical sites and the sea with friends.
