I enjoyed meeting various animals and people who love animals while staying in Singapore!

During the volunteer work, I felt a sense of community as strangers came together with the shared desire to care for the animals,

I loved being able to experience multiple cultures at once in Singapore, a multi-ethnic city.

Hello! I am an adult who has just graduated from high school!

Hello! I''ve just graduated from high school, hehe

When I was wondering what to do before graduating, I remembered a gap year project I''d had my eye on for a while. While looking through the projects, since I was especially interested in animals, I applied for the Singapore wildlife rescue overseas volunteer program.I joined this overseas volunteer gap year because I wanted to take the opportunity to travel abroad alone and gain experiences.

*For Jeong Ye-jin, who wanted time to think about new challenges and her future and to grow, daily tailored one-on-one personal missions offering unique challenges, opportunities to consider her life''s direction, and relaxed time were provided, and a Gap Year Note to reflect on herself and make plans was also provided.

I wanted to practice standing on my own in the world through this gap year!

My goal in this Singapore overseas volunteer gap year was to practice standing on my own in the world and to put into action my caring for animals myself.

Before leaving for Singapore I booked my plane ticket first and prepared for departure by packing summer clothes. And since Singapore is a country with good public safety, even though it was my first solo trip, I wasn''t too worried, hehe.

I enjoyed meeting various animals and people who love animals!

So I arrived in Singapore and the overseas volunteer schedule began.Above all, I was glad to be able to go to a wildlife conservation volunteer organization and meet various animals, and to meet people who love animals.

I was moved to see not only the staff at the local volunteer organization but also friends who had come from around the world volunteering — their genuine love for the animals came through.

And thinking back to how I initially couldn''t easily start conversations with the volunteers I worked with,By the time I was leaving, I was proud of how much I''d grown—I''d easily start conversations and even exchanged Instagram IDs! :)

Also, through this overseas volunteer work, whereas before I loved animals mostly for their appearance, now I have a desire to understand their lives and essence as well.

What does a typical day look like for the Singapore animal rescue project?

As for a typical weekday schedule for volunteering: I wake up, have breakfast and relax freely, then start volunteering at 9:30 with a break in between. If the morning volunteer session ends around 1:00, I eat lunch and rest, then volunteer from 2:00 to 5:00. After everything is finished, I return to the accommodation, wash up, have free time to rest, eat dinner, and go to sleep!

And on days when I wasn''t volunteering, I traveled around downtown Singapore — Singapore generally has almost everything concentrated in the city center!Among them, the places I recommend visiting are Little India, the National Gallery, Clarke Quay, and Orchard Road (if it''s hot and you need somewhere cool)!

    # My tips for preparing a Singapore volunteer gap year!

    - Language
: In Singapore they use Singlish — English with a stronger, more clipped pronunciation — and I got used to it the more I heard it!

    - Accommodation
: Even on weekdays after volunteering ended, there was more free time than I expected, so it was nice to go to the shopping mall near the accommodation! And youcan stock the accommodation''s fridge with the food you bought without any problem! Oh, and there''s a fish shop (Qian Hu) near the accommodation — taking the shuttle bus from there is very useful for getting around!

    - Meals
: It would be good to bring things like gochujang (stir-fry chili paste)!

    - What to bring
: I recommend preparing arm sleeves, mosquito repellent spray, single-use detergent sheets, Google Maps, and a Singapore MRT app in advance! haha

    My gap year!

    Experience ★★★★★
: While volunteering, people who had just met united with the intention of caring for the animals, so I felt a sense of belonging to the community. I really enjoyed meeting and talking with many people, and it was great to be able to see rare wild animals in person that are hard to encounter normally!

    Learning ★★★★
: I learned to love animals, and I had the experience of getting closer with new people!

    Environment ★★★★
: Although the weather was hot, there were spaces for individuals to rest or spend time, which was nice.

    Safety ★★★★★
: Singapore is a really safe country in terms of public safety!

    Leisure ★★★★
: I liked that, since it''s a country where people of many races live together, you can experience multiple countries'' cultures at once!
