Hello! I am a company employee in my 50s who works a regular job in Korea.

Hello! I am an office worker working a regular job in Korea. I am 50 years old.

After working for more than 20 years, I unexpectedly changed jobs and felt I needed time just for myself, so I took this opportunity to take a gap year through a senior language study project in Cebu, Philippines.

*For participants who wanted a special vacation and a challenge just for themselves Activities to enjoy leisure time, daily customized 1:1 personal missions for new challenges were provided, and a Gap Year Note for self-reflection and planning was also provided.

Why I joined Gap Year’s Philippines language study project.

I had known the organization Gap Year for a long time and had always wanted to someday take my own gap year. There were also many Gap Year projects that I liked.

Then I happened to find a project at Gap Year that matched my circumstances perfectly, and I chose it without hesitation.

I also usually prefer independent backpacking trips over group tours when traveling abroad and have traveled to about ten countries. Because I have always dreamed of long-term stays abroad when the opportunity arises, this language study in the Philippines felt even more exciting and anticipated.

    Preparations before departure?

On my laptop I have a list of items needed depending on the nature of each destination. I always refer to and update this list for the next trip, and I used it this time as well.

But in the case of this language study project, it was not a simple tripSince it involved staying in one place (Cebu) and studying English, I referred to the guidebook provided by Gap Year as much as possible and prepared by reading reviews from previous Gap Year participants online.

Through this experience I wanted to complete my bucket list!

In my case, I have been managing my own bucket list for the past four years. Before, I only had a vague feeling of ''I really want to try this,'' and as life went on it would be forgotten again — that repeated, so I took this opportunity to write a bucket list.

There were various items: things that could be solved if I just had the money, things that required time, and things that also required effort, so this time The Gap Year served as a stepping stone toward achieving the final goal of one of the items on the list, and through this Gap Year it seems to have fulfilled that role sufficiently.

During the language study period, thanks to the missions provided by Gap Year, I was able to spend more time reflecting on myself.

During the Philippines language study period, the daily Gap Year missions sent by email and tailored to my characteristics allowed me to consistently take time to reflect and organize myself, and I felt I was not alone. Thanks to that, I was able to have more time to reflect on myself and take one more step toward my goals, which was very rewarding.

Also, the biggest difference from before this gap year seems to be that through this gap year I learned for myself a proper way to study English.Of course, this method is something everyone knows and many people are already doing, but because what I experienced and felt is imprinted more deeply than what someone else might tell me, I feel very happy as it seems to have given me the motivation to continue studying English.

    People I met in Cebu.

Of course, there were local Filipino English teachers who taught me. During class, besides the textbook we had many conversations about daily life, history, and current affairs, so a few teachers in particular left a strong impression.

Also, my roommate who was especially sensitive to the heat, Joka (Mongolia), Aki (Japan) who is preparing for employment after graduating university, and Yuya (Japan) who took a two-week vacation from work were especially close. There was also the Pilge couple who used to run a travel agency in Mongolia and came to study after feeling the need for English, Konse (Germany) whom I met in Bohol Panglao (he has settled in the Philippines with his wife for four years and even gave me my favorite hat as a gift), and three Colombian families who shared the Balicasag island-hopping itinerary — all left a strong impression.

To those who want to have their own gap year.

I think it''s best to seriously think about what you''re looking for before leaving for the gap year project.

Also, the biggest advantage of the gap year is that it provides daily missions that continuously guide you in adapting to the local environment and reflecting on yourself—how much you make the results your own, though, depends on you.Take action unconditionally. Regardless of the outcome, the more you act, the more you will experience and grow.

My personal Cebu, Philippines travel recommendations!

    1. Southwestern Cebu region

Oslob whale shark watching, Tumalog Falls (background of the movie Avatar), Kawasan canyoning (one of the world''s top 3 canyoning spots), Moalboal sardine run (huge schools of sardines).

It takes 3–4 hours to get from downtown Cebu to the southwestern region, and because you usually need to depart around 2–3 AM to see the Oslob whale sharks, if you''re a bit diligent you can do in one 2-night, 3-day trip what travel agencies usually split into two packages.

    2. Bohol Panglao

Bohol Panglao is famous for its clean beaches and waters, making it a popular spot for island-hopping snorkeling (Balicasag, Virgin Island), dolphin watching, and turtle viewing. It''s also known as a great place for scuba diving, so many people go diving there.

The route from Cebu is to take the OceanJet high-speed ferry from Pier 1 to Tagbilaran Port in Bohol (2 hours), then take a taxi or motorcycle to Alona Beach (where most accommodations are located) (30–40 minutes). From there, you can leisurely enjoy island-hopping snorkeling, scuba diving, massages, and Alona Beach sunsets over a 2-night, 3-day stay.

    3. Cebu IT Park Night Market

At Cebu IT Park there''s a place called Sugbo Mercado that holds a night market from Thursday to Sunday. There are tables in the center surrounded by stalls. You buy the food you want at the stalls and sit at a table to eat. You can enjoy a variety of foods at affordable prices—Filipino local dishes, Japanese, Korean, beer, fruit juices, etc.—so it''s a place frequented by many locals as well as foreigners.

My tips for preparing for a Cebu gap year in the Philippines!

    - Language
:It''s best to increase the amount of time you''re exposed to English as much as possible. Also, try to have as many conversations as possible with local English teachers or friends, even by using a dictionary, and review in the evenings with your textbook or dictionary—this will greatly improve your English skills!

    - Accommodation
: I stayed in a dormitory run by the local language school, so I was able to live comfortably. Also, most of the items you need for dormitory life can be bought at local markets, so I recommend taking as little luggage as possible when you leave.

    - Meals
: The menu changes slightly every day and the food is fairly good, so overall everyone eats well. However, if you are a bit picky, it might be good to bring something like tube-type gochujang (stir-fry red chili paste). Also, cooking is possible in the dormitory, so you can buy ingredients at the market and cook simple meals, or buy fruit separately to eat.

    - Things to bring
: Earplus, Fucidin ointment, a large laundry mesh for holding clothes, and slippers are good to bring. Also, because the academy''s air conditioning can make it cold, comfortable long-sleeves are essential. Other daily necessities can be purchased at local markets.

    My gap year!

    Experience★★★★★
: Through this experience, the most important thing I realized during the senior language training was how much effort I needed to put in and how I should study.Although four weeks wasn''t a long time, I feel that my speaking and listening skills improved noticeably.

    Environment★★★★
: The local accommodation and meals, the distance between the dormitory and lecture building, and the academy''s appropriate curriculum provided an environment that made studying easier.

    Safety★★★★
: The local language academy and dormitory block outsiders and have strict entry/exit controls, so there was no need to worry about safety.

    Leisure★★★★★
: I spent weekends and holidays traveling around solely to backpack and experience local life, so I was 100% satisfied with my leisure time.
