The three-month gap year I took in Cebu during my leave of absence allowed me to directly experience different cultures,

it was a valuable opportunity to meet various foreign friends! And especially, the cost of living in the Philippines is inexpensive

so it was great that I could enjoy the travel activities I wanted during the language-study period without financial burden!

Let''s not stress about English anymore! Learn English while having fun in Cebu!

    An Seon-yeong — a gapper''s review (university student)

Hello! I am a university student who took a leave of absence and went on a three-month language-study gap year in Cebu!

Hello. I am a student who took a leave of absence from university and went to Cebu, Philippines for three months through a gap year program.

The reason I chose a language-study gap year in Cebu:I was afraid of English and lacked expressive ability and confidence, so I wanted to overcome that and, through gap year consulting, was recommended a language-study program in Cebu, Philippines.

They also advised me that in the Philippines I could overcome not only my fear of English but also social difficulties through meeting foreign friends, and because it''s cheaper than other countries, it would be an opportunity to learn more about myself through experiences beyond English study — so I chose this Cebu language-study gap year project.

For An Seon-yeong, who wanted to improve her English and break out of her own mold, daily activities for new experiences and customized one-on-one personal missions to properly plan her future life were provided, and she was also given a gap year notebook to reflect on herself and make plans.

What to prepare before taking a gap year?

Before departing for the Philippines, I looked up information about local language schools and Cebu, and purchased plane tickets and exchanged currency.

I also planned to get the recommended vaccinations. Finally, I prepared the necessary items by checking the program-related materials and checklist given as orientation materials by the gap year program!

Through this Cebu language study, I wanted to overcome my fear of English!

Among the various gap year projects, since I chose a language-study program, I most wanted to first overcome my fear of English, and my goal was to develop my expressive ability through meeting foreign friends and to create time to learn more about myself through various experiences.

Also, since I lacked confidence and had difficulty approaching others first, I wanted to overcome these things.

The Cebu language-study gap year project was a really good environment to improve my English!

During the Cebu language-study period, there were many opportunities to meet foreign friends through roommates and class time, and I liked that classes were taught according to each student''s level.

Also, because there are one-on-one lessons where you can work on your weaker areas, I think this place is a really good environment to improve English! :)

Before participating in this gap year, I had many worries and concerns and was always anxious, but while staying in Cebu I was able to escape that reality and, without those worries, focus on my present self, which actually allowed me to more easily organize my thoughts — that was good.

What was a typical day in Cebu like?

In the first month there were intensive (Sparta) classes in the morning and evening; after breakfast, classes started at 8:40 and we had lunch at 12. Then classes resumed at 1 and finished around 6. Classes consisted of two special classes, two one-on-one lessons, and 1:4 group classes; the order varied per person, and after classes there was free time.

My roommate I met in Cebu!

For me, I remember getting along well with my roommate during my language study in Cebu. One roommate arrived the same day as me, stayed with me for a month, and left before I did. Because we could empathize with and rely on each other in the new environment, my first roommate is the most memorable, and I was really sad the day they left. (heh)

    My Cebu travel recommendations!

I recommend Oslob and Moalboal. In Oslob, you can see whale sharks up close on a whale shark tour — something you can''t experience in many other places!

Also, snorkeling in Moalboal is recommended because you can see the beautiful sea and huge schools of sardines. If you''re lucky, you might even spot sea turtles!

My tips for preparing for a Cebu language-study gap year!

    - Language

Before you go, studying even a bit of basic English will help you make more friends and understand classes better!

    - Accommodation

Roommates are important! If your roommate is from another country, there''s the advantage of using more English.

    - What to bring

Be sure to bring emergency medicine like cold medicine from Korea! Also, since classrooms or rooms at local Cebu language schools can feel cold because of the air conditioning, it''s a good idea to bring a blanket or at least one long-sleeved piece of clothing. (heh)

    My gap year:

    Experience★★★★

It was a valuable opportunity to live in a new place like Cebu instead of Korea, to directly experience different cultures, and to meet many foreign friends!

    Learning★★★

There were more opportunities to use English than usual, so I liked that I naturally used English more!

    Leisure★★★★

You can easily take weekend trips during the gap year, and because the cost of living in the Philippines is low, you can enjoy the travel activities you want without much financial burden!!
