Hello! After resigning this year, I went on a 2-month gap year language program in Cebu!

Hello! I''m Park Danbi — after resigning, I spent two months this April in the Philippines as a gap-year language student and then returned to Korea!
While I was unsure which gap year program to choose after quitting my job, I learned about consulting, received consultation, and joined a language program in Cebu, Philippines.I feel like I got 120% of the experience I needed at the right time.If you have even a little hesitation about choosing a gap year project, I strongly recommend getting gap-year consulting before you go!!
*For Park Danbi, who wanted time to take on new challenges and to think about and grow into her future self, she was provided with activities for new challenges, opportunities to consider the direction of her life, daily tailored one-on-one personal missions to improve English, and a gap-year notebook to reflect on herself and make plans.
Preparations before setting off on the gap year!

About a week before departure I checked what I needed, prepared it, and packed it in my suitcase (currency exchange, taking photos, etc.). The suitcase I had prepared turned out to be smaller than I thought, so about a week before departure I had to buy one in a hurry. I recommend not buying important items in a rush like I did — take your time to research and prepare carefully!
Before going to Cebu, I became even more eager to leave and more curious. Knowing I was going with Gap Year made me feel braver.
I was exhausted and burned out from work and desperately needed a chance to see myself from a new perspective.

After working for a long time I experienced burnout and reached a point where I strongly felt my own limits, so I was having difficult days. Then I learned about Gap Year and felt I needed to break away from my routine, throw myself into a new environment, and see things from a new perspective.
So I wanted to try making friends with foreigners, and I thought it would be good to be proficient in a common language for people who speak different languages, so I wanted to restart studying English, which I hadn''t done since school, and also ease my fear of foreigners. My goals were small but there were quite a lot of them.
The most memorable thing during my time in Cebu!

If I had to name just one most memorable thing in Cebu, it would be the people.
One might assume from conditions or environment alone that they''d be far from happiness, butthe Filipino locals I met smiled a lot, were warm, knew how to stay relaxed in any situation, and I felt they didn''t complain about their circumstances. The way Filipinos live their lives was very impressive to me, and there were many aspects I wanted to emulate.

Also, I developed relationships with foreign friends I got close to at the local language school in Cebu — we sometimes keep in touch, and they''ll even tell me in advance if they plan to visit Korea. After finishing the Cebu language course and returning to Korea, my enthusiasm for studying foreign languages often fades or becomes neglected, but when it''s time to contact my foreign friends or when an opportunity to meet arises, it motivates me to refocus on studying again! :)
A typical daily schedule in Cebu!

On weekdays there are regular classes: two one-on-one lessons and two 1:4 group lessons, and you can also take electives. After finishing the regular classes, the rest of the time was free to use as I pleased.
After class I usually had dinner at the academy or went out to eat, sometimes exercised, and I also reviewed what I learned that day. On weekends there were no regular classes, so I could stay out overnight or take day trips to go out and have fun!

# Through this gap year I can feel my mind becoming healthier and that I am changing!

I was supposed to participate in the gap year project earlier, but due to circumstances I postponed it and joined about a year late. So before joining this Cebu language study project I was physically and mentally exhausted—like I had run out of all fuel.
However, after spending my gap year in Cebu I feel my mind is gradually getting healthier and that I am changing!Living the same routine every day, there were thoughts I couldn''t have, but while spending time in the Philippines I was able to try many different things!
# My personal Cebu travel recommendations!

The Philippines is famous for beach activities, but if you stay long you can''t go swimming all the time.If you''re a bit tired of water activities or miss cultural life, I recommend the Casa Gorordo Museum. It''s the house where Juan Gorordo, the Philippines'' first bishop, lived, converted into a museum. You can also get a glimpse of 19th-century Filipino life, so if you go to Cebu City I highly recommend stopping by. They also offer English guided tours, so definitely give one a try! Haha.
# My gap year preparation tips!

- Language
: Before participating in a Cebu language study program, skimming through a grammar book once will be very helpful!
- Accommodation
: Local accommodation is in a dormitory style where you live with other students, so as long as you follow basic manners when living together, you can stay comfortably without much inconvenience.
- Meals
: I hope you''ll try many foods that interest you, and things you can only eat locally in the Philippines! :)
- What to bring
: You can get daily necessities locally. And be sure to bring water-activity gear for leisure. Surprisingly, you end up going out a lot and there are many photo opportunities, so I recommend bringing going-out clothes and your favorite summer outfits!
