#Able to think more calmly #Animal rescue volunteering and interaction with various people #Satisfaction from relieving stress and gaining new motivation

  •

Because I usually like animals, I decided to participate in this Singapore animal rescue volunteer gap year program!

It was great that I could not only volunteer but also travel, and while staying in Singapore

I was able to relieve the stress that had built up from daily life and gained the motivation to return to my routine!

Volunteering to rescue rare wild animals injured physically and mentally in Singapore

Soheun Lee — gap year participant (22 / university student)

    # Hello! I''m Soheun Lee, a third-year university student majoring in nursing.

Hello. I''m Soheun Lee, a third-year nursing student.

I usually like animals and am very interested in animal rescue, so while looking for related volunteer activities I found GapYear''s Singapore overseas volunteer program. After finishing the first semester of my third year, I used my summer vacation to participate in a two-week wildlife protection volunteer program in Singapore.

*For Soheun, who wanted a special volunteering experience and time to reflect and grow regarding her future, She was provided with activities that offered unique challenges, daily tailored one-on-one personal missions to consider life direction and have relaxed time, and a GapYear notebook to reflect on herself and make plans.

    # I decided to participate because there was a GapYear project in Singapore related to animal protection that I like!

The reason I joined the Singapore overseas volunteer project was that I wanted to do a special volunteer activity, and while searching online I found GapYear''s volunteer project and decided to join!

Also, it had been a semester that was very hard because of practicums, assignments, and exams, so I chose this overseas volunteer program to interact with various people and to take a break.

Also, although I usually like reptiles and animals, I don''t often have opportunities to interact with them directly; I chose this overseas volunteer program because I thought I could get close to animals, interact with them, and learn. And I applied because it was attractive that I could travel as well as volunteer, not just do simple volunteering.

    # Preparations before participating in the Singapore animal rescue volunteer project!

Before departing, I first checked my passport expiration date. I prepared in English the documents required by the organization, such as a criminal record check, vaccination records, and a medical certificate. After that I purchased travel insurance, wrote down what items I would need in Singapore, and prepared them.

In that process, the checklist provided by Korea GapYear was very helpful. They provide detailed information on documents to prepare in advance and items needed locally, so if you prepare according to those materials, you should be able to prepare without much difficulty! :)

As for the plane ticket, I found stopovers bothersome, so I used Singapore Airlines for a direct flight.

    # I wanted to relieve the stress accumulated in daily life through new experiences in Singapore!

I didn''t participate in this overseas volunteer activity with grand goals. I was simply under a lot of stress from practicums and semester life, and I wanted to get away from the organization I belonged to for a while, so I joined this volunteer activity.

As a result, through volunteering in Singapore I was able to relieve the stress that had built up in daily life. And during the overseas volunteer period, I met and communicated with various people, gained new perspectives, and was able to adopt a more relaxed way of thinking.

    # Living and adapting on site made me forget the stress I had!

Living and adapting to life there, I was able to forget the stress I had.And during my time in Singapore I could feel calm and at ease. I hadn''t generally had a very positive view of Southeast Asia. But through this Singapore volunteer project my perception changed and I found myself wanting to come again next time! haha

There were more people participating in the project alone than I expected, and getting close to them locally and volunteering and traveling together became good memories.

Although it was a short period of two weeks,This opportunity allowed me to relieve the stress I had immediately and gain the momentum to return to my daily life! :)

Another great thing about the Singapore volunteer activity was that I could see and touch various types of reptiles up close.I was moved to see many people working for these animals and giving lectures to raise others'' interest. Through these experiences I learned that there are more animals waiting to be rescued in many places than I had thought. It was a time to realize and learn that I should pay more attention to this issue.

    Life in Singapore!

As for the local volunteer schedule, volunteering starts at 9:30 a.m. Each day the local staff assign tasks, and you carry them out. There are no particularly difficult tasks; I prepared food for the animals, cleaned cages, and cleaned the turtles'' tubs.

Lunch is from 1 to 2. Then work resumes at 2 and ends at 5.After 5 it''s free time, so I sometimes showered and rested in my room, and sometimes took the shuttle out to explore downtown Singapore!

People I met during the Singapore volunteer program!

During the volunteering period I met an older sister and a friend who, like me, came from Korea through a gap year to participate in Singapore animal rescue volunteering. Traveling with them allowed me to have various experiences I couldn''t when I was alone. I also became friendly with the local organization staff and went out to eat with them. It was more fun and active than I expected. haha

Also, there was someone who lives locally and volunteers four times a month; volunteering with that person I was able to talk a lot and get close to them.During the volunteer period there were more opportunities than I thought to meet and talk with a variety of people!

My recommended places to visit in Singapore!

After work I recommend getting a quick meal or going to a pub near Choa Chu Kang station. I also recommend going to Clarke Quay to see the night view and visit pubs.

For weekends, I recommend a route that goes to Chinatown, then Marina Bay Sands, and Orchard Road. And on Sentosa Island I recommend going to Disneyland or riding the luge,Definitely bring a swimsuit and relax by swimming at the beach—highly recommended! It''s really great!

My tips for preparing for a Singapore volunteer gap year!

    - Language

: Singlish (Singaporean English) has some words pronounced differently from American English. So if you listen to Singlish often through YouTube or other media before coming, you will be able to communicate more easily while volunteering!

    - Accommodation

: It''s good to bring light clothes to sleep in. Also bring as much mosquito spray and repellent as possible, or buy them at a nearby station.

    - Meals

: The local volunteer organization''s accommodation provides meals purchased from outside daily to volunteers. They offer vegetarian options, but tofu and soy-based mock meats are served a lot so it wasn''t too difficult. Also the portions are very large, so I couldn''t eat it all and always left some. There are cooking utensils, so if you want you can buy ingredients outside and cook yourself. Also you may drink a lot of water, so it''s good to bring a water bottle.

    - Items to bring

: Mosquito spray is essential. It would be convenient to bring a small bag to carry when walking around outside. Also a tumbler! I used mine a lot! A portable charger will be useful. And arm sleeves (arm covers) are useful!!
