Volunteering as a Childcare Teacher in Cambodia!

#Became more persistent and able to accomplish tasks #Hands-on experience leading and designing the program #A sense of pride and being moved when the children followed along

What I liked about the Cambodia volunteer project was that it wasn''t a passive form of volunteering,

but that I could plan programs myself and gain experience that could help the children!

Having the perseverance to see something through to the end is an experience that I think will really help me a lot in the future!

    # Hello! I''m Siyeon Lee. I''m interested in educational volunteering and I did childcare volunteer work in Cambodia!

Hello! I''m Siyeon Lee, and because I''m interested in educational volunteering I went to Cambodia for childcare volunteer work.

Doing overseas volunteer work had been on my bucket list.Among those, since I had often participated in volunteer clubs and done many activities related to children, I chose and applied for an overseas volunteering program taking care of children that I thought would be practically helpful based on what I had done so far.

Among the many gap-year volunteer projects, I applied for the volunteer program in Cambodia considering the price, duration, and things I wanted to enjoy in my free time while there.

*For Siyeon Lee, who wanted a time to take on new challenges and think about and grow for her futurea tailored 1:1 personal mission related to challenges and opportunities to consider the direction of life was provided daily, and a gap year notebook that allowed reflection and planning was also provided.

    # Before departure, I prepared by looking for reviews from people who had done a gap year in Cambodia and by buying and reading related books!

Because it was my first time doing educational volunteering before departure, I didn''t know how to do itI looked up reviews from people who went to educational volunteering on the internet and on the Gap Year website, and bought and read a book about educational volunteering.

Besides that, I reviewed the orientation materials sent by Gap Year and took time to prepare and think about the volunteer work. Thanks to the materials sent by Gap Year and the emails they sent to match my pre-departure schedule, I was able to prepare more comfortably and thoroughly!

    # What attracted me to this project was that it wasn''t passive volunteering, but allowed me to plan programs directly and do volunteering that could help the children!

I have always been interested in education-related volunteering, but what I had done so far was domestic volunteering, and this time I applied for the Gap Year volunteer program to gain experience in overseas volunteering.

What particularly attracted me to this overseas volunteer activity was that it was not passive volunteering but allowed me to plan programs myself and try volunteering that could help the children — this was very appealing.I also wanted to experience living with foreigners and being exposed to an environment where I would use English a lot.

    # By being persistent and making the classes interesting for the children, they gradually followed along better, which made me very proud and moved.

While volunteering in Cambodia, what struck me was that there were many French people volunteering with us; unlike me, who hesitated at first not knowing what to do, they taught the children with a systematic educational approach. I learned that France''s education system itself is systematic, and it was fascinating that they taught the children things they had been taught.

At first the children didn''t understand English and loved playing so much that they couldn''t concentrate on class,But by being persistent and sparking the children''s interest to teach them, they gradually followed along better later on, which made me very proud and moved.

Also, I lost my phone at the beginning, but because I didn''t have my phone I actually spent more time with the other foreign friends and got closer to them. One foreign friend who stands out is an Indian friend named Shivani; she considered me without a phone and made travel reservations for me, and we traveled together and became very close!

And during my time in Cambodia, it was a good opportunity to take time to leisurely think about my future and to solidify my plans going forward.

    # A day in the Cambodia overseas volunteer project looks like this!

By 9 AM we go to the volunteer center, do movement/dance activities with the children, and give them showers. After that, we separate children who need education from those who need play: in the children''s class they receive English and math lessons, while the kids have simple lessons like the alphabet combined with play.

After teaching until 11, we eat lunch and until 2:30 is the children''s nap time, so volunteers can also have a rest. After that we bathe the children again, have playtime like coloring or singing, finish volunteering at 4, and return to the accommodation or have free time!

    Recommended Cambodia travel route!

In Siem Reap, where Angkor Wat is located, behind the local market there''s a large night market with big clubs and restaurants gathered, giving it a Hongdae-like atmosphere.Beers are cheap and there are lots of delicious foods, so visiting with foreign friends and enjoying the nightlife there is really fun.

Also, Cambodian historical sites like the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng have good audio guides in Korean, so I recommend visiting to learn more about Cambodia''s history. Personally, I think sites related to the Killing Fields are places people from our country should definitely visit.

My tips for preparing for volunteering in Cambodia!

    - Language

: Don''t worry too much! Just say what''s on your mind; foreigners will usually understand from context. Don''t worry and speak confidently!

    - Accommodation

: Since you''ll be sharing with friends of various nationalities, it''s good to come with a considerate attitude :)

    - Meals

: At the local accommodation where I stayed a local cook provided the food, so I could try various traditional dishes. Cambodian food often contains cilantro, which might not suit everyone''s taste, but since you''ll often eat out with foreign friends, I think it''s good to try at least a little to gain the experience.

    - What to bring

: Clothes and daily necessities are cheap, so I mostly bought them locally in Cambodia. However, I recommend buying items that are used directly on the body, like sanitary pads, before you come.

I think gap year volunteering in Cambodia is not difficult as long as you have an open mind and the willingness to work hard. I was able to meet various people, broaden my perspective, and it was a good project that gave me a chance to reflect on myself. And rather than just going, if you think more about what you can do for the children and prepare accordingly, you''ll have a more memorable project experience!

    My gap year is!

    Experience★★★★

: It was a great opportunity to live with people from various countries!

    Learning★★★★

: While volunteering with children I learned how to manage and educate them.

    Environment★★★★

    Leisure★★★★

: You can enjoy a variety of leisure activities at low prices. Personally, I recommend definitely bringing a swimsuit!
