#Gained the courage to try new things #Learned the value of life by bonding with animals #A reassuring calm that gave me the drive to return to everyday life

The Singapore animal rescue volunteer activity I participated in because I wanted to spend a rewarding and meaningful vacation became a time of many experiences for me. It became a time to do so. While caring for the animals, I felt the preciousness of life and a sense of responsibility, and I was able to fully feel the relaxation and stability that I couldn''t experience in the city, which gave me an opportunity to regain my strength!

Hello, I''m Park Shin-young, 23, currently studying Public Administration at university!
I like new activities and experiences, but I had been putting off starting them and hadn''t been able to do them,Because I wanted to spend a rewarding and meaningful vacation, I chose the Gap Year Singapore overseas volunteer project.
*For Park Shin-young, who wanted time to take on new challenges and to think about and grow for her future, activities for different challenges, opportunities to ponder the direction of life, and customized 1:1 personal missions for leisurely time were provided daily, and a Gap Year notebook to reflect on oneself and make plans was also provided.
# I decided to participate because there was a gap-year project in Singapore related to animal protection that I liked!

Actually, I had thought that I hadn''t been spending my school vacation time meaningfully until now, and I thought I would have even less time like that in the future.
So this time, wanting a special experience, I found Gap Year through an internet search,Among many overseas volunteer programs, I decided to join because Singapore, where public safety is good and which seemed suitable for trying a long-term stay for the first time, had an overseas volunteer project related to animal protection that I liked! :)
# Since it was my first time going to Singapore, while preparing various things I felt more excitement than worry!

Since it was my first time going to Singapore, while preparing various things I felt more excitement than worry.
For departure preparations I packed by making a checklist, and for other things I frequently checked the volunteer preparation documents sent by the Gap Year coordinator. Blog posts and website reviews of Gap Year overseas volunteer experiences were also very helpful.
Through this Gap Year in Singapore, first of all!I wanted to escape my busy daily life and feel relaxed, and by trying new experiences in a new place I wanted to gain the driving force to truly follow the path I should take in the future!
# Through this gap year, I developed a desire to try more challenging experiences abroad in the future!

The Singapore overseas volunteer activity I joined was located close to nature, so I was able to feel much of the relaxation and stability that can''t be felt in the city, and while directly caring for various animals up close, I was able to feel their preciousness and a sense of responsibility.

And through this volunteer work I developed a regular routine, and challenges toward new things felt a bit more familiar, so they were no longer scary. Also, I developed a desire to work hard to fill my shortcomings so that I can try more challenging experiences overseas.

# Here''s what life in Singapore was like!

Starting with the local volunteer schedule: volunteering took place from Monday to Friday and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) were free time. On weekdays we worked from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, had lunch from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, and worked from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Considering the hot weather there were frequent breaks, so the schedule wasn’t tight and I liked that.
Also, what stood out during the Singapore volunteer project were the staff and local volunteers who worked hard to teach us the tasks — they even brought us food and kindly answered questions, so I was thankful.
I was also surprised that quite a few people were interested in Korea and were learning not only the culture but the language as well.

On weekday evenings after the volunteer schedule ended, I visited shopping centers or the Night Safari (which is only open at night), and on weekends I toured Sentosa Island, large theme parks that take a lot of time, and cultural streets and areas.
# My tips for preparing a Singapore volunteer gap year!

- Language
: If you haven’t used English often, it’s good to study basic listening or conversation a little before you go! But over time your ear will naturally adapt, so you don’t need to worry too much.
- Accommodation
: The accommodation had a distinctive Singaporean atmosphere, and some shower stalls had hot water, which was nice.
- Meals
: For breakfast I mainly had cereal with milk, bread, and fruit. During the volunteer program lunch and dinner were provided, and on weekends if you tell the organization in advance whether you’ll eat or not they’ll buy the ingredients and put them in the fridge for you. Also, meals are mainly vegetarian but are varied with tofu, mushrooms, and soy meat, and the seasonings and sauces suit Korean tastes perfectly!
- Items to bring
: If you’re staying long-term, I recommend buying shampoo locally. Disposable laundry wipes were useful, and sometimes toilet paper ran out, so it’s good to bring an extra roll. For volunteering it’s best to wear cool long pants, a short-sleeve T-shirt, and cooling arm sleeves.
My gap year is!
Experience ★★★★
: It was a truly, truly unforgettable new experience!
Learning ★★★★
: While doing animal volunteer work, even though I wasn’t a major, I was able to learn the tasks relatively easily. Everything was new to me and I think I learned a lot in a very enjoyable way.
Environment ★★★★
: It was nature-friendly and relaxed!
Safety ★★★★★
: There were experts everywhere who kept helping, so I was able to volunteer without much difficulty!
Leisure ★★★★
: Work finished between 4 and 5 PM, so you could go somewhere afterwards, and weekends were free time so there was plenty of leisure to enjoy.
