PROJECT INTRODUCTION

This is a project recommended for those who want to experience these moments every. single. day!
This project involves teaching English to economically disadvantaged children in Cambodia and supporting their growth with love. Recently, as Cambodia's economy has been slowly growing, the child population has increased significantly. However, most Cambodian children are not properly educated due to poverty and are forced onto the streets. Additionally, there are few institutions to care for children who have not yet entered elementary school, so even 3-4 year-olds may end up scavenging for trash or begging to survive each day. During this time, their safety and human rights are threatened daily. Become a popular teacher who teaches with love so that the children’s big eyes can be filled with beautiful smiles!
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
Project and Activities
- The project starts on the first and third Monday of every month.
- Activities are held five days a week from Monday to Friday.
- The school schedule is divided into morning and afternoon sessions.
1) Morning: From 7:50 to 10:30, including a 15-minute break.
2) Afternoon: From 14:00 to 16:30, including a 30-minute break.
- Primarily, you will teach English to children and help with English conversation practice, as well as engage in games and various activities with them.
- After the official school schedule, you can help with English conversation practice with local teachers or staff from 16:30 to 17:30.
- You can also participate in helping with young children’s meals at 10:30.
- The project schedule and activities may change according to local conditions.

This is a project that gives love and courage to help children gain confidence and hope in life. Participants are assigned to schools (childcare institutions) where they teach English and take care of the children. Additionally, depending on the participant’s will and capabilities, they can take the lead in activities such as singing, drawing, and playing games. |
INSTITUTION INTRODUCTION
This project takes place at a childcare institution located in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The institution was established in 2011 by a church to provide educational opportunities for marginalized children in the city.
The institution recognizes the importance of education for the future of Cambodia and aims to help Cambodian children grow up with not only knowledge but also proper character. They offer education in Khmer (the local language), as well as international languages such as Chinese and English.
Approximately 20 children aged 3 to 6 years are divided into 3 classrooms and receive lessons. During breaks, they relax and socialize with friends in the play area. With the help of 3 local teachers, 4 local staff members, and international volunteers, the children are growing and nurturing their dreams in this environment.
ACCOMMODATION INTRODUCTION
During the project, you will stay at a guesthouse-type accommodation with other volunteers. You will experience the joy of communal living with friends from various nationalities.
The accommodation is managed and operated directly by a local partner organization and is located in the city center, ensuring a safe living environment. The rooms are typically shared by up to 3 people, and each room is equipped with a private bathroom, fan, and basic furniture. The common areas include tables, chairs, and a balcony where you can relax or spend time with friends in the evenings or on weekends after activities.
Meals are provided at a designated restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can choose your preferred menu, and lunch can be taken as a packed meal. Breakfast usually consists of simple items such as bread, eggs, and fruit with tea. Lunch and dinner offer a variety of options including fried rice, noodles, curry, and meat dishes. The accommodation is located in Phnom Penh city, making it convenient to participate in the project during the week and explore the surroundings on weekends. The walk to the project site takes about 30 minutes, or about 25 minutes using a tuk-tuk, which is a common mode of transportation in Cambodia.

Please note that Cambodia is generally hottest from March to May, and reservations often fill up quickly between July and August.

A Few Tips on Transportation in Cambodia
Cambodia has a weak transportation infrastructure, and public transportation systems like city buses and subways are underdeveloped. The main modes of transportation in Cambodia are motorcycle taxis and tuk-tuks, which are three-wheeled vehicles modified from motorcycles. Motorcycle taxis are very unsafe, so it is recommended to use tuk-tuks for safety, even though they are slightly more expensive. Unlike regular taxis, tuk-tuks do not have fixed prices. The fare is negotiated with the driver each time, but recently, mobile apps are often used to book and pay for tuk-tuks.
The typical one-way fare starts from about 2 USD and can vary greatly depending on distance, time of day, and number of passengers. Although you may initially find Cambodia's unfamiliar transportation system confusing, understanding the local culture and transportation will help you enjoy your stay in Cambodia even more!

Cambodia's official name is the 'Kingdom of Cambodia,' and it shares borders with Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand in Southeast Asia. Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, is the economic and political center where the painful past of the French colonial era coexists with modern development. The city is full of attractions such as the National Museum, the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, and the Independence Monument. However, alongside the rapid economic development, you can also see the struggles of Cambodian people whose lives are hard due to uneven economic benefits resulting from political instability. Many international NGOs and relief organizations are working on social reconstruction in Cambodia across education, economy, agriculture, and politics.
1. Tonle Sap Lake
Cambodia is home to Tonle Sap Lake, the largest lake in Southeast Asia. It stretches 16 km in length and 36 km in width, making it one of the largest lakes in the world. Surrounding the lake are floating villages. These are houses built on water, complete with schools, shops, and playgrounds. People living in floating houses use small boats, like canoes, to move between their homes, shops, and schools. About 80% of the people living in floating houses are engaged in fishing and many are of Vietnamese descent. This is because they settled in Cambodia after leaving Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Visitors to Cambodia can take boat tours to see the life in these floating villages up close.
2. Tuol Sleng Museum
This is a place that preserves the painful history of Cambodia. Originally a school, it was used as a prison by the Khmer Rouge during their reign, where mass executions took place. The site holds records of the atrocities, including torture rooms, beds where victims were killed, and skulls. Visiting this site allows you to hear the tragic history of Cambodia from guides and spend time paying tribute to the victims.
3. Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is a beach city located at the southern tip of Cambodia. It is a representative tourist destination in Cambodia. Cambodia is bordered by land on three sides and by sea on one side, so sea and seafood are not commonly found in other parts. However, Sihanoukville beach, located about 4-5 hours from Phnom Penh, attracts many international tourists and offers opportunities for scuba diving. It is a perfect paradise destination for eating, drinking, and enjoying in Cambodia.

* If you cannot pay in full, please make a deposit of 500,000 KRW and pay the balance within 2 weeks. Based on the date of the deposit, the process for confirming participation will proceed, and availability and slots will be checked. We recommend applying for all gap year projects at least 3 months before the project start date due to the normal procedures and preparation time. Applications should be made at least 2 months in advance. If you need to apply urgently due to unavoidable circumstances, you can pay an additional fee for expedited processing.
* While we assist with expedited processing, there are basic times required for communication with local agencies and confirmation of participation. Therefore, participants using the urgent application service must actively cooperate with the Korea Gap Year Operations Team.
