PROJECT INTRODUCTION

This is an internship project in the field of arts and design in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Buenos Aires, the cultural hub of Argentina!

When we think of Argentine culture, we might only think of tango or the musical Evita. However, a closer look at Argentine daily life reveals that culture and art are deeply embedded in everyday life. People of all ages enjoy high levels of cultural and artistic activities as part of their daily lives. Specifically, Buenos Aires, often called the "Paris of South America," allows you to experience both European and South American beauty through its colonial buildings, sculptures, and parks, helping you develop your artistic sense in areas like art, design, and architecture.

Q. Are there any paid internships?

Internships abroad are typically focused on education rather than simple tasks, so most are unpaid. Moreover, paid internships require participants to have sufficient experience and qualifications, which involves more time, effort, and higher costs for matching participants with companies.

On the other hand, since the hourly wage in Argentina is lower than in Korea, the actual stipend for interns is quite modest. Therefore, it is recommended to start with an unpaid internship to gain practical experience and build your career for domestic and international employment.

* For inquiries about paid internships, please contact Korea Gap Year at koreagapyear@gmail.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What are the challenges of an international internship?

During the internship, you will encounter a variety of people and environments. Especially in Argentina, where the culture is different from ours, there might be situations that are hard to understand. However, overcoming these challenges with an open mind and adventurous spirit will enhance your understanding of the culture and improve your work skills. One way to prevent difficulties is to travel locally before the internship starts, learning to respect and understand the local culture. Also, if you encounter difficulties during work or daily life, don't worry—there will be a local mentor available to help you anytime!

Q2. What types of institutions will the internship be with?

Participants will be assigned to private companies or public institutions in Buenos Aires. The specific institution will depend on the participant's area of interest, experience, and major, and will be decided after consultation with the participant. Once the internship institution is confirmed, changes or refunds will not be possible, so please carefully choose your preferred field of application.

Q3. What type of insurance is required?

The insurance must cover overseas illness, injury, and liability. The insurance period should cover at least from the project start date to the end date. Generally, you can find suitable insurance products by inquiring with insurance companies specializing in overseas coverage.

Q4. How many hours will I generally work?

Typically, you will work between 20 to 30 hours per week, generally 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. However, the work schedule can vary depending on the field and institution, including shifts or daily work. Additionally, you may be asked to work extra hours, especially near deadlines, but you can adjust this through discussions with your supervisor or local mentor. Use your free time outside of the internship to learn Spanish or plan trips with friends!

Q5. What if I don't like the company where I am interning?

The internship institution is confirmed through discussion with the participant. The search for an institution is based on the participant’s preferences and abilities, and after the introduction of the institution, the participant can choose to approve or reject it. If rejected, the process of finding a new institution will start again (up to 8 weeks). Once the internship institution is confirmed, changes or cancellations are not possible. Therefore, clearly express your preferred institutions when preparing your resume, cover letter, and application to ensure a smoother matching process.

PROGRAM LOCATION INTRODUCTION

LOCATION INTRODUCTION

ㅣ Location :  Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina and the largest romantic city in South America, is a place where the passion of South America and the delicacy of Europe coexist. The people of Buenos Aires take immense pride in their culture. The wide boulevards, old cafes and restaurants along them, and historic Spanish-style buildings and theaters showcase the former grandeur of Argentina. The expansive squares and green parks offer a space to rediscover the leisure that has long been forgotten in Korea. Buenos Aires experiences spring from September to November and autumn from March to May, opposite to the seasons in Korea.

1. San Telmo Market
The San Telmo Market is a well-known flea market in Buenos Aires, open on Sundays. During the week, it's quite peaceful, but on Sundays, it becomes lively with vendors from around the world. You'll find a range of unique and quirky items, from vintage cameras that may not work, to tools that look like they’re from a century ago, antique-style accessories, old paintings, and distinctive leather products. With some luck, you might score a genuine antique at a great price. Additionally, tango music and dance performances are common throughout the market, making it even more enjoyable. End your Sunday by relaxing at one of the market’s street cafes with delicious food and a refreshing beer.

2. Colon Theatre
Located in Buenos Aires, the Colon Theatre is considered one of the finest theatres in the world. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008 and, after three years of extensive renovations, reopened in 2010. Visitors praise the Colon Theatre for its cultural experience, stunning architecture, and excellent acoustics. There are even free performances, so be sure to time your visit accordingly! Once known as one of the top three opera houses in the world, experiencing an opera at Buenos Aires’ Colon Theatre, often referred to as the Paris of South America, is a truly romantic experience.

3. Plaza de Mayo
Plaza de Mayo was created to commemorate the May Revolution, during which Argentina declared independence from Spain. It’s fair to say that Plaza de Mayo is where Buenos Aires was born, as this revolution led to Argentina’s independence. In addition to the Independence Monument, the plaza features grand buildings that blend European and South American architectural styles. This plaza is also a gathering place for important national events and public demonstrations, so it’s a great spot to witness Argentina’s significant social issues up close.
