PROJECT INTRODUCTION
Croatia: A Country Actively Working Toward a Society Where People with and without Disabilities Can Live Together
When you think of Croatia, what comes to mind? It is a country close to Eastern Europe, known for its beautiful heritage sites and seas, attracting many tourists. However, there is a lesser-known fact: Croatia is a country where the government actively leads efforts in *deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities and transforming residential facilities, setting an example for other countries.
Since 1997, there has been a push for ‘deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities’ in Croatia. From 2010, the government began taking direct action, and positive effects have been seen from these proactive measures. Nevertheless, people with disabilities still face challenges integrating naturally into civil society, receiving appropriate education, and finding suitable employment.
To help these individuals live better lives and foster a society where everyone can live together, your support is crucial! If you have an interest in social welfare, human rights for people with disabilities, and deinstitutionalization, this is a great opportunity to experience Croatia’s advanced welfare environment and become a part of it.
* ‘Deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities’ refers to enabling individuals with disabilities to leave institutional settings and live independently in society with people without disabilities. The issue arises because disability alone shouldn't confine individuals to institutional living for life, and their living environment should not be restricted to narrow institutional settings.
* This project operates in accordance with Goals 10 and 17 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
Small Acts of Help Create a Healthy Society Where Everyone Lives Together
In this project, participants will engage in personalized care activities for individuals with disabilities at a local care facility in Split, Croatia.
Individuals with disabilities who have transitioned out of institutions to live independently will now live within the community alongside people without disabilities. In this broader living environment, they will have more choices compared to life in an institution. While this is positive, it also presents new challenges. Specifically, integrating into society, receiving proper education, and finding suitable employment remain common difficulties for individuals with disabilities living outside institutions. Continuous support is essential for their independence and self-sufficiency.
In this project, participants will take part in activities that contribute to the independent lives and healthy society of these individuals. If you have an interest in disability welfare, you will be able to experience and learn about the atmosphere and environment of disability care institutions in Croatia. Additionally, volunteering and living in the exotic environment of Croatia, along with volunteers from different countries, will enrich your project experience.
■ Example Activities
The disability care facilities here are specialized according to the age, physical, and mental disabilities of the individuals. Participants will be assigned to appropriate facilities based on their experience and the situation of the local institutions. Each facility has about 20 individuals with disabilities, who are divided into small groups. Participants will work in teams with local staff and other volunteers, engaging in various indoor and outdoor activities. The nature of the activities may change depending on the weather and seasons, though indoor activities generally remain unaffected. The examples of activities below are for reference, and other activities may also be included.

* Since you will be working closely with local staff, no prior experience in disability-related volunteering or training is necessary to participate.
* The activities include outdoor tasks. In summer, strong sunlight can be a concern for skin. It is recommended to prepare appropriate clothing and items (comfortable clothing, shoes, sunscreen, hat, etc.) for the project.
* Animal therapy programs involve activities such as therapeutic horseback riding, allowing participants to interact with animals.
* This project requires submission of a criminal record certificate and health check-up certificate.
- The project starts on the first and third Monday of each month and ends on Friday. (From May to August, it starts every Monday.)
- Check-in is on Sunday before the start date, and check-out is on the Saturday following the end date.
* Generally, weekends are free time, with activities conducted from Monday to Friday.
■ Project Schedule
Volunteering involves about 3 to 5 hours per day and will be scheduled in the morning, afternoon, or evening depending on the facility where you are placed.
The schedule below is an example for the first week, and from the second week onwards, Mondays will follow the same schedule as other weekdays.
The schedule may be flexible according to individual needs.
■ Additional Information
- In the morning, you will receive various useful information such as Croatian culture, local introductions, project details, basic Croatian language lessons, and safety precautions. After lunch, a city tour of about 2 hours will be conducted, exploring the city center of Split. If needed, this time can also be used to receive help from local staff to purchase transportation cards, local SIM cards (up to 10 euros), or exchange money.
- Saturdays and Sundays are free time, allowing you to explore the city, visit other regions of Croatia, or travel to other European countries.
- If you prefer to have your lunch at the volunteer activity location, you can pack your meal in a lunch box provided during restaurant operating hours.
* If you wish to continue Croatian language classes beyond orientation, you may do so by paying an additional fee. Please inquire with Korea Gap Year for more details.

This project is highly suitable for those majoring in disability support, special education, social work, occupational therapy, or rehabilitation therapy!
You will not only experience Croatia’s pioneering disability welfare policies and atmosphere but also have the opportunity to engage in volunteer work at various facilities specialized according to the age and types of disabilities, allowing you to match your specific experience and interests. :)
Of course, prior experience is not necessary! All activities will be conducted with local staff and volunteers. The difficulty level of the activities is not high, so there is no need to worry.

ACCOMMODATION INTRODUCTION
Participants will stay in hostels provided by the local organization. The accommodation focuses on maintaining harmony with nature to create a sustainable world. It features a vintage feel with furniture made from locally sourced organic materials, offering an experience of positive future design. The local organization is committed to environmental protection by reducing water usage and producing and consuming food locally. The accommodation includes a dining room and lounge where you can interact with volunteers from various countries.

The accommodation is located in the center of Split, with a bus stop to the volunteer activity location within a 5-minute walk and the city center within a 10-minute walk. The surrounding area includes supermarkets, cafes, ATMs, pharmacies, and other public facilities, providing convenient living conditions. Additionally, laundry services provided by the hostel are available for approximately €10 per load.
Meals are provided three times a day. Breakfast includes toast, cereal, spreads, fresh fruit, eggs, tea, coffee, and juice in a shared space. Lunch and dinner are served at a restaurant located below the hostel, offering traditional Croatian dishes made from fresh local ingredients. You can choose from vegetarian, meat, or fish menus, which are prepared and ready to eat upon ordering.
- This project tends to fill up quickly, so those wishing to participate are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

LOCATION INTRODUCTION
■ Location: Split, Croatia
Croatia occupies part of the Balkan Peninsula and is a must-visit country for those traveling to Eastern Europe. Known for its beautiful old towns, stunning beaches, and over a thousand islands, Croatia has a rich cultural diversity influenced by both Roman and Turkish heritage, reflecting Mediterranean and Eastern European impacts.
Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and a major port city. Known for its friendly and peaceful atmosphere, it was not bombed during World War II, allowing important historical sites to remain preserved. The Diocletian's Palace and the old town of Split, dating back to the Roman era, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and represent some of the most beautiful examples of Croatian heritage. Experience the project in Split, where you can enjoy a blend of Eastern European and Mediterranean vibes, Roman-era scenery, a lively atmosphere, delicious Mediterranean food, and warm sunshine.

If full payment is difficult, you can pay a registration fee of 500,000 KRW upfront and settle the remaining balance within 2 weeks. The process for confirming participation will begin from the date of the registration fee payment to verify availability and confirm participation. It's important to secure your spot quickly for your desired dates and duration! (Refunds are not possible once participation is confirmed)
* However, if the start date is approaching, the payment schedule for the remaining balance may change depending on the circumstances.
■ Early Bird Discount and Emergency Application Guide
We recommend applying for all Gap Year projects at least 3 months before the project start date due to normal processing procedures and preparation time. Applications should be submitted no later than 2 months before the start date. However, if you need to apply urgently, you can use the emergency application service to expedite the process by paying an additional fee.
* While we will assist with expedited procedures as much as possible, basic communication time with local agencies and confirmation procedures are required. Emergency applicants must actively cooperate with the Korea Gap Year operations team.
