LOCATION INTRODUCTION
Location : Oxford, England
Oxford, England, is not only the oldest university city in the English-speaking world but has also been a cradle of British humanities for over 800 years, having hosted countless intellectuals from around the globe. It is famous for being the filming location for the ‘Harry Potter’ series. The weather in Oxford is often cloudy and rainy, typical of England, but it has more clear days compared to northern cities and enjoys a mild climate throughout the year. Summers are cooler than in Korea, while winters are warmer.
<Famous Landmarks in Oxford>
■ Christ Church College
Oxford University comprises 38 colleges and 6 private halls. Among them, Christ Church College is the most famous. Combining both a college and a cathedral, Christ Church has a long history and has produced many renowned figures, including 13 British Prime Ministers, Lewis Carroll, and philosopher John Locke. Additionally, the Great Hall in Christ Church inspired the dining hall scenes in the 'Harry Potter' films. The hall is used as a dining area for students just as it is depicted in the movies.
■ Bridge of Sighs
Oxford has its own 'Bridge of Sighs,' named after the famous bridge in Venice. Officially known as Hertford Bridge, it is more commonly called the Bridge of Sighs. The bridge connects two buildings of Hertford College near the Bodleian Library. It is said to have been named because students would sigh as they crossed it after receiving their exam results. However, this bridge can only be crossed by Hertford College students.
■ Carfax Tower
For those who want to see the panoramic view of Oxford, Carfax Tower is recommended. Built in the 13th century as part of St. Martin's Church, it is located in the heart of Oxford. Although the other buildings of St. Martin's Church have been lost, this tower remains. Climbing the narrow, tall stairs of the 22-meter high Carfax Tower will reward you with a view of Oxford's architectural landscape while hearing the church bells ring.
Although both the UK and the US are English-speaking countries, there are differences in accents, pronunciation, and word meanings. American English pronunciation tends to emphasize vowels more strongly, making the consonants appear softer and the vowels more prominent. In contrast, British English pronunciation emphasizes consonants more, making the consonants clearer but the following vowels less pronounced. |
