Kim O-jeong gap participant’s review!
Hello, I’m Kim O-jeong and I am 24 years old. I love to travel and experience new things. After graduating from college I was thinking about my career path. After the consultation with Korea Gap Year, I decided to volunteer in Bali as it has always been my dream to go there. Through the Bali education volunteer trip, I was able to do meaningful volunteer work, travel, and spend my free time thinking about my future :)
I wanted to have an exciting journey and not just experience it through social media!
After graduating from college, I was thinking about my career path. When I discovered KoreaGap Year I liked the idea of being able to choose which project suited me and receiving such great help during the preparation. During this time, I believed I needed help finding my career path with Korea Gap Year. They were able to help me.
I had previously traveled alone, so I had no worries about staying there. This time I wanted to have time to think and develop my thinking skills. In Korea, I saw myself only looking for fun and stimulation that I could get in a short period of time by looking at social media. My goal was to spend a month abroad, spend time thinking, and learn about myself!
I wanted to have an exciting journey for myself, not just a moment of happiness :)
Bali volunteer trip, I was able to experience touching moments that are hard to feel during regular trips :)
Since it was a volunteer trip and a program that included volunteer work, I was worried about work I have never done before. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to do well as my English isn’t quite good. It was difficult at first but not as much as I thought it would be, I felt a lot of satisfaction from this experience.
So I think I was able to gain things that are difficult for me during a trip through this program. Through this volunteer experience I felt proud that I was able to share something that I had even if it wasn’t special but I felt grateful to th balinese people who treated me well even though I was there for a short period of time. During the last days of Korean class, I received gifts and letters from the students. We played games together and had a party on the beach during the last day, it was such a touching experience.
A few weeks ago, I was worrying about my future but after participating in the volunteer program I had more time to think. If I planned everything on my own and took the trip I wouldn’t have focused on my life instead I'd worry about having fun and what to do. Since living in one place and participating in this program where I lived rather than traveled I was finally able to think about myself.
It was great having a lot of time getting to know Balinese people while in the program. I visited the homes of local students through mentoring, through local activities, and educational work. I was able to get a close look at their lives, different perspectives, and values. My students that took part in the Korean classes will be a great memory to me as thinking of them will remind me of my precious connections I have in Bali!
Living a month abroad can be scary and worrisome but to experience it once in your life you can't miss out on! So I recommend you to try it. This opportunity was important to me as it made me reflect on my life, understand myself, meet new people, and learn different perspectives. If you have the opportunity to experience this, I recommend you do it!
I didn’t think much about working abroad before but after participating in this program and living in a different country and seeing how others lived it motivated me to start thinking about working overseas.
It was time for me to fully think about my happiness and myself instead of relying on others. To finally have the chance to set a direction for my career path was a nice discovery on this break. Trying new things can make you discover your dream!
Discovering new things and having a peace of mind is something I didn’t think would happen.
As someone who wanted words of encouragement and new experiences, Bali was quiet and peaceful to be. At the time, I felt that peace was a bit difficult for me. I didn’t have the confidence to converse in English yet so when teaching the language it was unfamiliar to me. There was help around me when I had difficulties and helped me with translation.
As the weeks flew by, I had no desire to leave. The villagers were always kind to me and the Korean language class students showed me a lot of affection. It was a month where I was able to gain a peace of mind by living in a completely different culture and atmosphere from Korea. These were the things I never knew I could find.
