*The following visa information is based on the purpose of visiting Canada to participate in a Korea GapYear project.

Canada eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

✅ What is an eTA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a new entry requirement for nationals from visa-exempt countries who are traveling to Canada by air or transiting through Canada. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Nationals from countries that do not require a visa to enter Canada, other than the United States, must obtain an eTA to fly to Canada. However, an eTA is not required if entering by land or sea.

Since March 15, 2016, nationals from visa-exempt countries traveling to Canada by air, or transiting through Canada, must have an eTA. You can apply for your eTA online through the official Canadian government website (Canada.ca/eTA). The eTA is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and you do not need to reapply as long as the eTA remains valid.

✅ How to Apply for an eTA

  • Application Process:
    • Visit the official Canadian government website to apply for the eTA.
    • Required Documents: Passport information and a valid credit or debit card.
    • You’ll need to complete a simple online form and pay a C$7 application fee (as of January 2022).
    • Most applicants will receive their confirmation email within 72 hours of applying.
  • Important Details:
    • Once you have applied, you do not need to print any documents. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport. You only need to bring the passport that was used to apply for the eTA.
    • If you apply for the eTA last-minute, you can do so from a device with internet access, such as your phone.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What happens if I arrive at the airport without an eTA? How can I get one?
A: If you plan to travel or transit through Canada, you must apply for the eTA in advance. The eTA application can be processed online from any device with internet access. Most applications will receive approval within minutes, but if there is an issue, you will receive further instructions by email within 72 hours.
  • Q: Do I need to print out proof of my eTA approval?
A: No, the eTA is electronically linked to your passport. Simply ensure that you bring the passport you used to apply for the eTA.

Visa Application Process for Canadian eTA by Nationality

The eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is available to citizens from visa-exempt countries who are traveling to Canada by air. Nationals from these countries do not need a traditional visa for short visits (tourism, business, or transit). Here’s a general list of eligible countries for the eTA program:

  • United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, European Union countries (including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, etc.), Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Brunei, Chile, Israel, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, Taiwan, Costa Rica, Mexico

Nationals from these countries can apply for the eTA if they are traveling to Canada by air. However, those arriving by land or sea (e.g., by car, bus, or cruise) do not need an eTA.

If you are from a country not listed here, you may need to apply for a regular visa instead of an eTA. Always check the official Canadian government website for the most up-to-date list of eligible countries and any specific requirements based on your nationality.
