I often stayed up all night looking at the world map.

I even planned to become an airline chef,

Because food was served when I flew, I thought being an airline chef would let me travel the world.

A curious child from an early age, Hugh Jackman enjoyed swimming and camping on the beach,He dreamed of becoming an airline chef simply because he wanted to travel the world. When he went to school, he experienced theater for the first time.He ended up taking overall charge of the musical 'My Fair Lady'. From then on, theater became an inseparable hobby for Hugh Jackman. After graduating high school, he studied communications with the aim of becoming a journalist. However, his major didn't suit him, and after becoming more interested in a theater class he happened to take, he seriously considered acting as a career.

The week I had my first class felt much more comfortable than the three years I had spent at university.

What helped him when he was pondering acting as a career rather than a hobby was the gap year he took right after high school. After graduating high school in 1987, he took a gap year teaching English to 14-year-old students at Uppingham School in the UK.However, at the time he was also unsure about his life and his gap year, and he had many worries.

Imagine an 18-year-old Australian teaching English to British children,

If I were the one paying to attend, I would have been quite annoyed.

Contrary to his worries, the students quickly warmed to the 18-year-old Australian teacher—young, open-minded, easy to talk to, and even handsome—and learned a great deal. And this experience became an opportunity for Hugh Jackman to rediscover his open, energetic personality and gain confidence.

After returning to Australia, he decided to pursue acting. He auditioned for and was accepted into Australia's famous soap opera 'Neighbours', but he was also accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), so he gave up the role on 'Neighbours' and went on to receive three years of performing arts training.Upon graduating from the academy, he starred in Australia's 10-episode drama 'Corelli', introducing his name to the public.

That young actor, who had firmly established himself, became known worldwide as Wolverine in X-Men and moved countless audiences with Les Misérables.

Also, when he went to the UK to film Les Misérables, Hugh Jackman returned to Uppingham School—where he had spent his gap year—and showed his affection for that time and the school. His choice to consider his career and dreams by experiencing the world rather than at a desk, and to cherish the connections he made then, seems to be why he appears more admirable as a person than as a film hero.
