was a driving force and turning point in my life.

It was an exciting experience! Learning Japanese in the thousand-year-old city of Kyoto, Japan

Review by Kim O-hyun, Korea GapYear Participant

    # Hello. I’m a student who went on a language study trip to Kyoto, Japan.

Hello. I’m a student taking a year off to find my identity and dreams after completing my military service.

I decided to spend a year off contemplating my dreams, but found myself stuck in the same monotonous routine. In search of a solution, I discovered this Korea GapYear Program and applied for a language study trip to Kyoto, Japan.

    * For Kim O-hyun, who participated to discover her true self, personalized 1:1 missions were provided, allowing her to engage in activities of her choice and truly enjoy the gap year experience.

    # I wanted to challenge myself in a new environment.

Having traveled abroad for as short as three days and as long as a week,
I thought spending a month living like a local would be a valuable experience and memory.
Instead of worry, I felt excitement, and my desire to take on new challenges grew stronger.

While preparing for my language study in Kyoto, I took time to write down what I wanted to do in Tokyo and what I would regret not doing.
Whenever I felt anxious, I reassessed my mindset and continued preparing for my departure.

    # It was fun to share the cultures of different countries.

Talking with friends from around the world and sharing each country's culture was such a fun and enjoyable experience.

We had graduation ceremonies every Friday at school, and while I felt sad that my close friends were graduating,
I cherish the memories of promising to meet again and exchanging good wishes.

Through my language studies, I learned about the Japanese language and culture, but I also gained insights into Japanese eating habits, etiquette, and the mindset of the people through various activities.

    # Every day became a precious memory!

The month felt long before I departed, but now that I’ve returned, it feels like such a short yet fulfilling four weeks.

Leaving a familiar environment for a completely unknown new one inevitably presents times when you must solve things on your own.

As a result, I did feel stressed, but even so, looking at the situation with the mindset of
'Let's focus on this moment' made my daily life in Japan a precious memory.

Looking back, I have absolutely no regrets and only think of it as a wonderful experience. 🤗

    # It was a time of transformation for myself.

Spending each day in the same pattern and routine, my motivation gradually faded away, and I spent days that felt meaningless to the point where I was too lazy to engage in any activities.

However, after going to Tokyo for language training through the Korea GapYear Program, I realized
what path I should take moving forward, what mindset I should hold,
and how valuable my life is.

I believe it is a project that is more than enough and valuable enough to act as the driving force and turning point in life🙆🏻‍♂️

    # What is a day like during a language study program in Kyoto, Japan?

Classes take place from 9:30 AM to 12:20 PM.
Each class lasts 50 minutes, with a 10-minute break in between.
After class, you can participate in activities in the afternoon.

If you want to join an activity, you need to sign up one week in advance.

Activities vary by program but generally end between 3 PM and 6 PM.

On days when I didn’t participate in activities, I had lunch at a restaurant near the school,
then spent time shopping or sightseeing in the nearby city.
