Simple Daily Life's Wild Life, Japan Tokushima Stray Animal Care Volunteering

  •

As I had aimed, I shared love without hesitation with the stray animals here. And I definitely think this experience helped me grow as a person. Although it was my first time staying abroad alone for an extended period, I feel like I managed to spend the time well through the activities I participated in.

The simple daily life of wildlife, volunteer work for stray animals in Tokushima, Japan

Review by Kim Jeongbin, Korea GapYear participant

    # Hello, I am a university student who left to share love with stray dogs.

Hello. I am a 23-year-old university student who loves Japan.
When I was doing my internship, there was a stray dog in the office, and by getting close to that dog, I became interested in stray animals. I was also interested in Japan as a country, wanted to learn Japanese, and this year I wanted to take on a meaningful new challenge, so the Tokushima stray animal volunteer work was perfect for me. When I made the decision and prepared, I realized that the strongest desire was to share love with the stray dogs.

    * Kim Jeongbin was planning a gap year to experience living with animals in Japan and chose the Tokushima stray animal volunteer work. If you're unsure where to start and how to make changes, and want a customized plan, I highly recommend 1:1 consulting with a gap year expert!

    # Sharing love with the puppies became an opportunity for me to grow even more.

As I aimed to, I really shared a lot of love with the rescued animals here. I also believe this experience has helped me grow significantly. This was my first time staying abroad alone for an extended period, but I think I managed well while engaging in the activities.

During my free time, I had moments to myself and even planned my future life. I also had the chance to experience Japanese culture. By sharing love with the rescued animals, I feel like I also became more mature.

    # A day in Tokushima, Japan: my volunteer journey with rescued animals in a small town!

Between 9:30 and 10:00 in the morning, volunteers are picked up at the accommodation and taken to the mountains where the dogs are. We spend time walking with the dogs until around 3:00 PM, feeding them, and sharing love. Afterward, it's free time, where we usually eat, shower, and rest for the next day.

During free time, you can explore the surroundings and enjoy Japan. You can also take two days off during the week as you wish.

    # My own Tokushima volunteer journey gap year preparation tips!

First of all, I received a lot of help during the orientation, and I carefully prepared by following the checklist provided by the gap year program.

✔ One of my biggest concerns was food, but there was a convenience store near the accommodation, which helped a lot. Hehe. If you’re not used to Japanese food, it would be helpful to bring some gochujang (Korean chili paste) and kimchi from Korea.

Please make sure to bring rain boots or hiking shoes. Also, since the volunteer activity takes place in the mountains, it would be helpful to bring comfortable clothes or clothes you don't mind discarding.

It is recommended to visit the tourist information center near Tokushima Station to get guidance and plan your itinerary accordingly. What impressed me the most was my personal favorite: the Awa Odori, a traditional dance from Tokushima, at the Awa Odori Hall :)
