Volunteering as a Childcare Teacher in Cambodia!

  •

Meeting wonderful people and sharing love during my volunteer work as a childcare teacher in Cambodia has boosted my self-esteem.

I naturally learned how to love myself.

By letting go of the thought that I had to do well and just enjoying the experience, I’ve reduced many habits that caused stress for myself.

Hello. I am a 20-year-old student majoring in public administration who participated in the "Volunteer Work as a Childcare Teacher in Cambodia!" gap year program during my vacation.

I have a strong interest in volunteer work and have been consistently volunteering domestically, but I suddenly felt the urge to try overseas volunteering.

Additionally, I was exhausted from preparing for university admissions and adjusting to college life, so I wanted to recover from stress and decided to participate in the childcare teacher volunteer program in Cambodia.

*For Yeom Mi-hye, who wanted time without stress and a sense of freedom, activities to distance oneself from stress, and personalized one-on-one missions that allowed her to feel free were provided daily, along with a gap year note that helped her reflect on herself and plan ahead.

    # I wanted to spend my time without stress and enjoy my freedom.

Knowing that I was putting a lot of stress on myself, during my volunteer work as a childcare teacher in Cambodia,

my goal was to give myself the freedom to create a time free of stress.

Based on the materials provided by Korea Gap Year, I prepared the necessary documents such as my passport, currency exchange, travel insurance, and vouchers, and focused on packing essential items and over-the-counter medications that are necessary for overseas travel.

    # I realized that I am a good person and deserve to be loved.

Through the people I met while volunteering as a childcare teacher in Cambodia, I realized that I am a better person than I thought and someone who deserves to be loved.

In particular, my foreign volunteer friends praised me for speaking English so well, even though it's not my native language, every time they told me that I am a good person.

I was really touched every time they said that. When the children I was taking care of hugged me and threw hearts at me, I felt like I was someone who could be loved.

It made me truly happy to realize that I am a person who can be loved.

    # My self-esteem has increased, and I feel much less stress about myself.

In Cambodia, through the volunteer work as a childcare teacher, I met wonderful people, and as I gave and received love, my self-esteem increased.

I naturally learned how to love myself.

By letting go of the thought that I have to do well and just enjoying, I also reduced many of the habits that caused me stress.

    # What is a typical day like as a volunteer childcare teacher in Cambodia?

After breakfast, we take a tuk-tuk to the activity site, arriving around 8:30. Once we arrive, we help the children with their snacks,

and at 9 o'clock, after the children's morning assembly and showers, we help them tie their hair and get dressed.

Then, we guide the children in play and alphabet instruction until 11 o'clock. When it reaches 11, the children have their lunch, and

the volunteers assist with meals, tidy up tables, and hang out the children's laundry. Afterward, it’s the volunteers' lunchtime, so we eat lunch then,

since the children have nap time, I also took a nap after my meal to recharge my energy.

At 2 PM, after waking up, I help the children shower, change their clothes, tidy their hair, and then guide them in play before wrapping up at 3:40.

This concludes the volunteer schedule, and the remaining time is free time, during which the volunteers and I take walks around the area or go out to have fun.

    # My Tips for Volunteering as a Teacher in Cambodia!

    (Language)

You don't need to worry about the language aspect as English is widely used in the field.

I could only speak a little everyday English, but there were no issues with communication :)

    (Accommodation)

I stayed in the accommodation provided by the organization. At first, it was a bit different from homes in our country, which was a little surprising, but I adapted quickly and

    had a comfortable stay.

    (Meal)

The menu was diverse, giving me a wide range of choices for meals. Among them, five were really delicious, so I often ate them.

Personally, I highly recommend the fried rice with veggies & chicken and the fried chicken with garlic sauce!

Special dishes come out occasionally, so it’s good to have some extra budget for meals!

    (Preparation Items)

Since the weather in Cambodia is hot, please bring plenty of mosquito repellent! Pack comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Kids are very active, so their clothes can get dirty quickly while playing, haha.

You can easily find Korean products like shampoo and wet wipes at nearby stores, and they’re not expensive, so you don’t need to bring too many household items!

    # Don’t worry, just go with a relaxed mind!

I hope you won’t worry too much about going on a volunteer trip as a caregiver in Cambodia.

I was also very worried about the different food and weather compared to Korea at first. When I actually arrived, I found that Cambodia was a nicer place to live than I had expected,

and over time, I naturally adapted to the things I was worried about. The worries I had turned out to be completely unnecessary, haha.

If you come with a relaxed mindset instead of worries, you'll be able to enjoy your volunteer experience as a childcare teacher in Cambodia much more fully.

    # My Recommended Travel Route for Volunteering as a Childcare Teacher in Cambodia!

The park near the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is incredibly beautiful! No matter where you start in Phnom Penh, it’s not far,

and no matter which way you go, the scenery is really beautiful, so I recommend walking around the park a lot.

    # My Gap Year as a Volunteer Teacher in Cambodia!

    Experience ★★★★★

It was a special experience that made me feel like I had about 30 children. I was moved and happy to connect with the kids, and to always have someone hugging me.

    Learning ★★★

Meeting countless people changed my perspective on life a lot, and I developed new dreams. Also, it was meaningful to learn about Cambodian history.

    Safety ★★★★★

As a Southeast Asian country, I was worried about pickpockets and harassment, but I didn't see any! It was a safe country to the point where my worries were unfounded.

When paying, I got a bit confused using both dollars and riels, but everyone treated me kindly without trying to deceive me as a foreigner, and they smiled a lot :)

    Leisure ★★★★★

After volunteering, I had a great time hanging out at pubs and swimming pools with foreign friends I met at the guesthouse.

The streets of Cambodia are beautiful, so I often went for walks around the area by myself.
