Through these experiences, I gained the confidence that I am a valuable person, and

I was happy to learn what makes me happy!

Filling up with warm love with the children in Hanoi, Vietnam!

    # Hello! I’m a young person eager to learn through experience! :)

Hello! I’m a young person who wants to learn a lot from experience! haha

Before leaving for this overseas volunteer gap year, I was physically and mentally exhausted. So, I thought about how I could become healthier and have some time to recover, and that’s when I found out about the gap year. There were so many projects I wanted to do on the Korea Gap Year website, so I decided to first have a one-on-one consultation and ended up joining a volunteer project in Vietnam that was recommended to me.

    * For Sunwoo Ahn, who wanted a meaningful volunteer experience and time to relax both physically and mentally, customized 1:1 personal missions, which included activities that allowed for meaningful volunteering and time for reflection and planning, were provided every day, along with the Gap Year Notebook to help reflect and plan their life.

    # What should I prepare before leaving for a gap year in Vietnam?

I prepared by looking at the list of things to bring for the Vietnam overseas volunteer project provided by Gap Year. Thanks to this, I was able to easily prepare for my departure. Also, in Hanoi, you can easily buy any necessary living items at a lower cost than in Korea, so you can purchase them after you arrive! :)

    # My goal for this volunteer work was to learn how to respect and express myself.

My goal during this Vietnam overseas volunteer project was to learn how to respect myself, increase my sense of self-efficacy, and learn how to express myself. Additionally, a major goal was to regain the physical and mental health that had been drained for a long time.

During the Gap Year period, I was able to reflect on myself every day and live in an environment that constantly challenged me, which I really appreciated.

During my time volunteering in Vietnam, I learned how to simplify things through the process of compromising and understanding while living with people from diverse cultures. Also, I felt that the food and culture in Vietnam were quite lively, and most importantly, I could feel the warmth between people.

    # I received an unexpected gift from a child with hearing impairment, and I cried the whole time.

When the Vietnam overseas volunteer project was nearing its end, I received many gifts. The most memorable moment was when a child with hearing impairment, who was returning home the next day, gave me a letter, a drawing, and a pair of earrings that they made themselves.

I received such an unexpected gift that I cried the whole time, and although we couldn't communicate with words, I expressed my gratitude through gestures, and the child also showed their own sense of regret in sign language.

I was deeply moved by their kind heart.

    # It was an experience that made me realize that I am worthy of being loved!

Through my time in Hanoi, I learned that I am worthy of being loved and discovered new aspects of myself that I hadn’t known before.

I also realized that helping someone isn't about helping in the way I want to, but rather, it requires deep empathy and trust with the person in order to provide true assistance.

Through these experiences, I gained confidence that I am a valuable person, and by spending time away from my family, I was able to discover what makes me happy!

    # People I Met During My Gap Year!

The coordinator of the local volunteer organization in Vietnam was a friend who constantly thought about and worked on how volunteers could have a better environment and learn more.

At that time, my Korean friend and I were very interested in the activities we were doing, and the local coordinator gave us the opportunity to take the lead in the "Movement Class." She suggested that we prepare the class and teach the children, so we were able to lead and prepare the class for a while, learning a lot from the experience.

Additionally, she helped the volunteers from different countries become close to each other. For example, when a volunteer was leaving to return to their home country, we would create a "Cultural Day," where we made and ate food from each country and wrote letters to one another! :)

    # For those planning a gap year!

The gap year overseas volunteer projects break away from the typical volunteer frameworks commonly thought of in Korea.

Additionally, thanks to the diverse friends from various countries you meet while volunteering, you get to experience the world from interesting and different perspectives.

    # My recommended travel destinations in Vietnam!

The place I recommend the most in Vietnam is 'Ninh Binh'! If I were to visit Vietnam again in the future, I would say that I'm going to Ninh Binh, because it was such a beautiful and moving place!!

    # Hanoi Volunteer Gap Year Preparation Tips!

I really enjoyed talking to my friends from France, Brazil, and Vietnam, where English is not their native language! Also, depending on the timing of your volunteer period, there may be times when the local accommodations are fully booked, so I would strongly recommend booking a bed on the first floor! It makes a huge difference in your quality of life! :) During dinner, I bought things like gochujang (Korean chili paste) and kimchi to eat together with others. And on weekends, I ate out often. Hanoi has so many delicious and affordable restaurants!

    - Packing List
: It's a good idea to bring eco-friendly bags, a large bag, and a carry-on suitcase that you don't mind leaving behind. Since I frequently traveled around Hanoi, I personally found it more convenient to bring a large bag!

    Experience ★★★★
: It was the best experience living and volunteering with friends from different countries and learning their cultures!

    Learning ★★★★
: While volunteering, I was able to change my perception of disabilities a lot! I truly believe it's a lesson you can't understand without experiencing it yourself!

    Leisure ★★★★
: Vietnam had many places to travel to every week, so it was great! :)
