I used to lack confidence in my English skills, but after visiting Malta, I was able to gain more confidence!

# Hello, I’m Yun Il-geon, 27 years old, and I want to improve my English.
Hello, I’m Yun Il-geon, 27 years old.
Watching native speakers made me want to improve my English skills. So, I chose this gap year project to improve my English skills. I also wanted to explore what I truly want to do and find the things that interest me. In other words, I wanted to improve my English level, find what I want to do, gain more experience, and achieve these three goals through my gap year.
# I was able to experience a lot of English through conversation.
I was happy to meet and converse with Europeans. By conversing with friends who had a similar level of English at the language school, I gained confidence and improved my English skills.
I also learned that there are many Western-looking people who can't speak English.I realized that even if someone is a foreigner, there's no need to be overly scared.
# A Day Spent in Malta!
I wake up in the morning and attend the language school by 9 AM. I had two sessions of English lessons until 12:30 PM, with a 30-minute break in between! After that, I had free time to do whatever I wanted.During my free time, I explored and went sightseeing. The route to St Elmo bridge in Valletta is not well-known, so I recommend visiting it after school hours.
# I’ve become more confident than before!
I wasn’t very confident in English before, but I was able to build my confidence through the gap year. Also, I’ve gotten used to living on my own and adapting to new environments, and I think I’ve gotten better at it.
# A piece of advice for prospective participants in the Malta language program!
Don’t be too scared when you face foreigners.Try speaking English confidently! Also, there are a lot of Japanese friends in Malta. Since they are often shy, it’s a good idea to approach them first.
It’s good to make the most of your time after the class ends.Instead of going straight home, it’s better to chat with friends or do something else. Every Tuesday and Thursday, there aremeetups for foreigners to speak English in Sliema. I recommend checking them out if you have nothing else to do after class!
# My Malta Language Study Preparation TIP!
- Language
: The official languages are Maltese and English, but many people actually speak English. You need the confidence to speak your thoughts out loud.
- Accommodation & Meals
: I stayed in a share house with a roommate. The roommate will probably become a great speaking partner! I cooked my own meals. Don't stress and enjoy eating whatever you want while living there.
- Preparations
: People usually use forks, and chopsticks are not provided separately. Also, sometimes there are no hangers in the wardrobe, in which case, ask the school for help.
