Lee Sung, a gap year participant’s review

    # Hello. I am a participant in my 30s who went on a gap year for language study in Malta after resigning from my job.

Hello. I am a participant in my 30s who took part in the 'Great value! Learn English safely in Malta, Mediterranean Europe!' program for three months.

I have always dreamed of living abroad, but it wasn't easy to go overseas while working at a company.

When I turned 30, I decided to quit my job, and I really wanted to spend a long time abroad when I had the physical and time flexibility.

There were many attractive programs on the Korea Gap Year website, but the Malta language study gap year was appealing because I could learn English,

traveling to other European countries was convenient, and the costs were reasonable, which is why I chose it.

*For someone like Lee Sung, who wanted to experience complete relaxation and meet various people, customized one-on-one personal missions were provided daily, including activities for relaxing comfortably and interacting with others, along with a gap year notebook to reflect on oneself and plan ahead.

    # I wanted to get away from familiar places and have a complete rest.

Because my personal situation in Korea was not good, my biggest goal was to get out of Korea and take a break.

Also, since I have a personality that likes being with people, during the Gap Year language study in Malta, I wanted to meet various people and get to know them.

In addition to this, I had some smaller goals such as improving my English skills, experiencing Maltese culture, broadening my perspective, and finding my true self.

    # I realized what a satisfying life is and how to express my emotions!

One day while I was resting on the beach with a friend I met during my language study in Malta, a foreigner walked by and said, “I love my life, my life is perfect”.

That was a bit shocking to me. In Korea, I've never heard anyone, even those with a lot, say

'My life is really perfect.'I believed that one could not be 100% satisfied with their life.

It was a completely eye-opening experience for my mindset. I realized that I don’t have to live strictly according to Korean society and that I can be satisfied with my life if I do what I want.I realized that I can be truly satisfied with my life and live happily.

I was impressed by how I learned to express emotions from my Latin roommate during my language study in Malta.

My Latin friends are very touchy and are free and clear about expressing their emotions.

At the beginning of my gap year, I felt really awkward when my Latin friends gave me warm hugs. But later on, I got close enough to those friends that I could hug them first.

I felt that I was getting comfortable with them.

In Korea, I was busy hiding my emotions, but observing my Latin friends' way of expressing feelings made me realize that expressing emotions clearly within appropriate boundaries helps in getting closer to someone.

    # I have gained confidence in my choices and am able to think more simply.

During my language study in Malta and the subsequent travels around Europe, I made decisions about even the smallest things on my own,

and while solving various big and small problems I encountered, I gained confidence. I felt proud of myself for successfully resolving things without issues.

I now have the confidence that I can go anywhere and adapt well, no matter where I am.

Also, I feel like my thinking has become a bit simpler compared to before participating in the language study in Malta.

Originally, I had many complex thoughts, which made decisions and choices difficult, but now I find myself clearing my mind and thinking simply.

Thanks to that, I have been able to make quick decisions and take swift actions, which has made my life much easier.

    # What I Did During the 3-Month Language Study in Malta!

    1. The First Week: Adjustment Period

Like any overseas experience, the first week was not easy. At that time, I hadn't started classes at the language school in Malta yet,

and I didn't know many people, nor did I know who to ask for help.

Everything felt unfamiliar, so I made a lot of attempts to adapt, including participating in various parties.

    2. 2 Weeks to 1 Month: Focusing on Academy Life & Daily Life in Malta

As I started attending classes at the academy, I quickly began to adapt to the language program in Malta. Meeting many foreigners

I naturally started making friends who matched my vibe one by one. After class, I hung out with the friends I made at the academy,

and when I had no plans, I would walk the beautiful paths even alone. Especially in Malta, since the streets are beautiful, whenever I had time,

I would walk along the sea. I also took breaks at nearby Starbucks, joking and playing with the staff.

It was a valuable experience to feel the small talk and culture of Malta.

    3. 2 Months: Complete Adaptation

After moving up to a higher class, I met friends who were much more fluent in English, and I made a lifelong friend with whom I was closest until I left.

By the second month, I became very close with my roommate, jogging together every day, and we reached a point where we could tell what each other was thinking just by looking at each other. :)

    4. The Last Month (3rd Month): Traveling Abroad + Wrap-Up

In the last month, I traveled abroad a lot.

Thinking that I might never come back to Europe after returning to Korea, I traveled to a different country every week.

From the UK to Rome, Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Barcelona, and even Turkey, I booked flight tickets and planned my trips every day.

I wondered if I was pushing it a bit, but in the end, it was a really good choice.

    # Tips for Preparing for My Own Language Study Gap Year in Malta!

    (Language)

While Maltese is mainly spoken among the Maltese, English is also widely used and understood.

If you're a beginner in English conversation, don't worry, just try to speak as much as you can!

    (Accommodation)

I stayed in accommodation provided by the institution. It was very clean and tidy, so I was very satisfied!

    (Meal)

If you are using the accommodation provided by the organization, you'll need to prepare your own meals, so I recommend bringing one or two of your favorite Korean recipes.

Pasta is easy to make, so even someone like me who isn't good at cooking found it manageable, but when I missed Korean food,

    I felt a bit sad because I didn’t know the recipes 😂

    (Preparation Items)

You can find most things in Malta, so you can buy them when you get here. However, since some items might not be sold in local stores,

it's a good idea to bring Korean sauces like doenjang and gochujang! If you, like me, plan to visit other European countries in addition to Malta,

be sure to pack a travel multi-plug!

    # My Language Study Gap Year in Malta!

    Experience ★★★★★

: I had so many cultural experiences. Especially in my class, there were many European friends,

and my roommates were friends from Latin America, Japan, and China, each with different cultures, allowing me to learn so much.

    Learning ★★★★☆

: I learned a lot, especially about culture. In terms of language, it was beneficial to learn many expressions used by native speakers of English.

    Environment ★★★★★

: It was a really safe, comfortable, and beautiful place where just a 10-minute walk from my accommodation leads directly to the beach.

    Safety ★★★★★

: The public safety is really good. It was a very safe country, even coming home at 4 AM.

    Leisure ★★★★★

: The government offices close at 1 PM, and many people swim at the beach after their classes and work, enjoying their leisure time.

I think I also enjoyed a relaxing time with them.
