Through my medical volunteer work in Cambodia, I've been able to reflect on what mindset I should have moving forward. Even if I could turn back time, I would participate again!
Medical Volunteer Work in Cambodia! Park Se-rin, 23, Korea GapYear Participant |
# I left because I wanted to grow personally!
Hello. I’m a 23-year-old university student in my fourth year of nursing.
Although I’m a senior about to graduate, what I’ve learned through my internships has mostly been vital signs and medication organization.
I realized that I needed to make some improvements after seeing myself like this.
Personally, I like traveling abroad, and I wanted to volunteer in the medical field before graduating. Just when I applied for the Korea GapYear Program, the COVID situation started to improve, and opportunities to go abroad began to open up, allowing me to go!
# I wanted to experience a medical volunteer activity that felt more immersive!
Wanting to participate in more hands-on training, I applied for a medical volunteer project in Cambodia. I wanted to practically engage in IVs, blood draws, and other nursing activities and meet patients in Cambodia to provide care. I was also curious about how Cambodia's medical system differs from Korea's.
# After returning from my medical volunteer work in Cambodia, I felt a lot of things.
There are various patients in the world, and it was an opportunity for me to reflect on what mindset I need to have in order to care for them.
I also realized how remarkable it is to go abroad alone without knowing anyone. When I was younger, I had done a short language exchange program and my personality is quite independent, so I wasn’t worried about staying abroad. However, after actually going, I felt that leaving for another country alone requires a lot of courage.
Still, because I gained so much from the month-long medical volunteer work in Cambodia, even if I could turn back time, I would participate again!
# Precious Friends I Met in Cambodia!
I met nursing and medical students from Cambodia at the hospital. They were around my age and spoke English, so we often chatted. Occasionally, they would give me a ride on their motorcycle back to my accommodation.
# My Go-To Place for a Refreshing Break in Cambodia!
I went for a walk and did some light shopping around Riverside. It felt refreshing to get out after staying only in the accommodation, eating outside food, and wandering around to see the local scenery.I also visited a department store called Aeon Mall quite a lot.
# My Tips for Preparing for Medical Volunteer Work in Cambodia!
- Language
: I think it would be helpful to learn some simple Khmer, like "thank you" and numbers.
- Accommodation
: I stayed in accommodation provided by the organization, and it was nice to have my own room.
- Meals
: Meals are provided at the accommodation. Sometimes you might crave Korean food, so it’s a good idea to bring your favorite instant noodles or snacks!
- Supplies
: An umbrella and mosquito repellent were very helpful.
