Gap Year Report: Volunteering to Rescue Rare Wild Animals Injured Physically and Mentally in Singapore

#Improved English listening skills, more proactive #Animal protection and local friends #Regret, longing for the brief encounters

  •

At first I was reluctant to talk with the locals, but from the second day I was smiling while talking and even asked questions first. The best thing I gained from starting conversations like this was making foreign friends.Because I met them while volunteering, I think I was able to make kind friends easily.

Volunteering to rescue rare wild animals injured physically and emotionally in Singapore.

Lee Seji, gap-year group ''Gapper'' (21 years old, university student) / 1-week gap year.

    # Communicating felt easier than worrying.

I am a second-year female university student. I live in Daegu and attend a university in Daegu. I can form sentences in English, but my listening is lacking.

I participated for a week, so it wasn''t a long period but During the volunteering, I was most worried about communication because I thought I might not understand English well. But once I got there, if there was something I didn''t understand I could ask the friends or younger volunteers I was working with and come to understand.

When I went to do rescue volunteering alone, fortunately there was an American volunteer, so I could understand American English; communication felt easier than I had worried.

    * For Lee Seji, who had a strong desire to gain varied experiences, a customized 1:1 personal mission related to independence and confidence was provided daily, and a gap-year notebook was also provided to reflect on herself and make plans.

    # It was only five days, but we shared a lot of daily life and felt sad when we parted.

When I arrived here on July 9, the first things that welcomed me were not the volunteers but mosquitoes and crows. While I put my luggage in the accommodation and looked around briefly, mosquitoes landed on my legs, and a crow would come onto my head. A staff member advised not to feed the crow and to avoid it if it comes because it might bite.

Throughout the activity period, they always disrupted our comfortable mealtimes at lunch and dinner. We were from Ulsan and lived with 20-year-old younger volunteers from Ulsan; we made and ate tteokbokki together, shared each other’s snacks, and received medicine when we were sick.It was only five days, but we shared much of our daily life and felt regret when we parted.

    # I realized that my small help was essential to the animals and was by no means small.

What I felt while volunteering was that my small help is definitely necessary to the animals and is by no means small.Animals can only stay clean and be fed when people take care of them.I hope more volunteers visit and help them with good intentions.

The best thing about volunteering was being able to make local friends. On the second day of volunteering, I met a 17-year-old who studies Korean, and we quickly became close while talking about K-pop.

I was able to get a lot of information about Singapore, and we connected on social media and are still in contact. This friend plans to visit Korea after graduating school, and we promised to meet then and have a fun time. short Although we will meet a few years after this short meeting, it won''t be awkward at all.

    # I think that because I met them while volunteering, I was able to make kind friends easily.

The biggest change after coming back is my English listening skills. It was the first time I lived in English for such a long time.

At first I was reluctant to talk with the locals, but from the second day I was smiling while talking and even asked questions first. The best thing I gained from starting conversations like this was making foreign friends.Because we met while volunteering, I think it was easy to make kind friends.

    # My personal gap year TIP

    - Language

Because the accent is different from American English, I recommend sightseeing in Singapore before volunteering to get used to Singaporean English.

    - Accommodation

The accommodation is very small, so a small suitcase is better. There is no air-conditioning so it may be very hot, but you can live comfortably with just a fan.

    - Meals

I couldn''t eat any of the local food. From reviews, some people brought canned tuna to eat, but since the rice doesn''t suit Koreans either, it''s much better to bring cup noodles than cans.

    - What to bring

Slippers are more convenient than sandals when washing. They provide shampoo and such, but it''s better to bring your own. There is detergent, but the scent isn''t pleasant, so it''s a good idea to bring single-sheet detergent packets from Korea.

There are a lot of mosquitoes, so mosquito repellent spray and cooling arm sleeves are very helpful.Never wear shorts. (If you wear shorts, you''ll get bitten by mosquitoes a lot ㅠㅠ)

    # My recommended travel destinations

After finishing volunteering, we took a bus to Malaysia''s capital, Kuala Lumpur, and had a great time. Singapore and Malaysia are right next to each other, so if you have time I recommend visiting.

Prices are much cheaper than in Singapore. My friend and I couldn''t eat Singaporean food at all, but we enjoyed Malaysian food.
