Kind Taiwanese friends,Quirky and sometimes incomprehensible but fun and kind Japanese friends. Spending time hanging out with the friends I met there and making memories together felt like a truly valuable experience.

# I wanted to do something truly for my life, not for school.

Hello, I am24years old, Lee Joo-hwan..I am a university student studying environmental engineering..Right now3year1semester up toI have completed and, after taking a leave of absence, am spending a gap year..
I23When I was 23, I had just been discharged, took a leave of absence, and wanted to do something for my life, not for school..Meanwhile, I was looking into traveling to Europe or,looking into a working holiday. But when I actually tried to do it, I didn''t know how to start,,andhow to spend my time meaningfully.I kept postponing it because I didn''t know..But3year1While attending the first semester of my third year, I was introduced to ''Korean Gap Year'' by a junior..That friend had briefly gone to Australia for volunteer work and said it was really great, so I began to look into gap years through the website. While looking at the Korean Gap Year website,Which project should I choose, and would choosing this project be the right choice?I had many concerns and wondered about that..Then I saw that there was consulting available,one-on-oneconsultingAfter receiving it, I participated in a gap year project..

My daily routine was waking up at 7 a.m., having breakfast, and attending morning classes from 8 to 12. After a one-hour lunch break, I attended afternoon classes from 1 to 5, and then had dinner and free time.
# The time I spent hanging out with the friends I met there and making memories together was truly a valuable experience.

During my gap year, I wanted to broaden my perspective, gain confidence, improve my English skills, make many foreign friends — I set my own gap year goals like these. I was able to meet many people there. The various Koreans I met there and the Taiwanese friends who are kind but tease me,quirky and sometimes incomprehensible in their behavior but fun and kind Japanese friends. The time I was able to hang out with the friends I met there and make memories together was truly a valuable experience.
It is also a place where people live together, and because people came from different cultural backgrounds, there were clashes, and I often felt stressed in interpersonal situations. This, too, was part of the process of learning how to build relationships with people different from me through the gap year.I think it was..
# My gap year tip

(Language)
Using only English to improve your English is a really good way..But using only English all day can be really exhausting..So instead of forcing yourself to use only English, I recommend speaking your native language when appropriate and focusing on English during study..Also, traveling with foreign friends and communicating with them is a good way.
(Accommodation)
The room was a bit small..But it wasn''t very inconvenient to stay there..Because it was just a place to sleep..However, the Philippines itself...has poor shower facilities, so it''s best not to have high expectations.. 2They fumigated once a week, so I consider it fortunate that there weren''t many bugs..They said other rooms had a lot of ants and occasionally bugs, but the room I used had no bugs.
(Meals)
Maybe because meals were prepared with limited funds, I didn''t find them very tasty..So at every meal I carried ramenand ate it., I mainly ate dinner out..
(What to bring)
You don''t need to prepare much.. Because people live there too, you can buy almost everything at shopping malls.. Therefore, be sure to only bring the necessary items and not bring too many.. I wasn''t greatly inconvenienced by not having one, but I recommend bringing at least one air freshener. Sometimes there are power outages that last several hours, so it''s good to bring a backup battery (power bank).
# For prospective participants

While the teachers are said to teach better than at other academies, you may feel that tuition and book costs are higher than local prices. However, I am satisfied that I spent a gap year there and was able to meet really good people and make great memories. Also, since it''s the Philippines and many things are below expectations, it''s best not to expect too much from the environment or facilities.

Experience ★★★★☆
People from various countries live together, so you can notice differences in personalities and characteristics by country.. And while staying there, you''ll have little experiences you couldn''t have in Korea that are hard to put into words..
Learning ★★★★☆
I think I learned a lot about cultural differences.. It''s different even from nearby Japan, and I think I learned things from people of more distant countries that I didn''t know.. Just living in a country other than Korea itself seems to be an opportunity to learn..I think I was able to learn both their good and bad sides.
